    • An electronic device is provided with a display such as a liquid crystal display mounted in an electronic device housing. The display may be provided with a backlight unit. The backlight unit may include radioluminescent backlight structures. The radioluminescent backlight structures include an ionizing radiation source that produces beta particles or other ionizing radiation. The radioluminescent backlight structures also include a phosphor that produces light in response to being struck by the ionizing radiation. The light produced by the phosphor passes through liquid crystal display layers and serves as backlight for the display. Photoluminescent material and light-emitting diodes may also be used to produce backlight for the display. The display backlight may have a light guide plate that is provided with light from the radioluminescent light source or other light source structures.

    • An electronic device includes a compound designed to raise a surface tension of a water-based solution. The electronic device may include a vent feature to allow air to pass through the vent feature such that the air reaches a component in the electronic device. The vent feature may include a first vent structure and a second vent structure, both of which combine to confine the compound. When the water-based solution passes through an electronic device opening, the water-based solution may reach the first vent structure. If a surface tension is sufficiently low, the water-based solution may pass through the first vent structure. However, the water-based solution may then reach the compound causing the compound to dissociate, forming form positive and negative ions that attract molecules of the water-based solution. Then, the water-based solution surface tension increases and does not pass through the first vent structure or the second vent structure.

    • A first electronic device optically communicates with a second electronic device. Each of the devices includes one or more optical transmitters, one or more optical receivers, and one or more lenses where each of the lenses includes at least a first and a second optical path that are optically isolated from each other. When the first electronic device transmits data to the second electronic device, an optical transmitter of the first electronic device transmits to an optical receiver of the second electronic device via the first optical paths of the lenses of the first and second electronic devices. Similarly, when the first electronic device receives data from the second electronic device, an optical receiver of the first electronic device receives from an optical transmitter of the second electronic device via the second optical paths of the lenses of the first and second electronic devices.
