    • A method, computer program product, and apparatus for managing power in a data processing system are presented. A core is activated in the data processing system and configured to operate at a frequency in response to receiving a request to increase a processing capacity of a set of resources in the data processing system. A determination whether a use of power resulting from activating the core configured to operate at the frequency meets a policy for the use of the power in the data processing system is made. A set of parameters associated with devices in the set of resources are adjusted to meet the policy for the use of power in the data processing system in response to a determination that the use of power does not meet the policy. A determination whether a number of operations performed per unit of time by a set of cores associated with the set of resources increased after activating the core is made. An indication that the request to increase the processing capacity of the set of resources is unavailable is made in response to a determination that the number of operations performed per unit of time by the set of cores associated with the set of resources has not increased.

    • A method, apparatus and computer instructions are provided for controlling communications between controller devices over an I2C bus hardware interface and a separate communication line, such as a GPIO line. With thermal/power management firmware installed on a system controller device, communications between the system controller device and a real time embedded controller device are sent using a predefined protocol whereby the system controller generates commands to the embedded controller by first performing an I2C write with a command packet, followed immediately thereafter by an I2C read to get the return packet. The embedded controller processes the command and returns the response to the I2C read. In addition, the embedded controller is able to make the system controller aware that it has a communication request by interrupting the system controller by asserting the separate communication line, in response to which the system controller issues a status request command to the embedded controller.

    • A system for creating a device tree. First, it is determined whether more than one version of a resource for a data processing system exists in a resource location code array table. In response to determining that more than one version of the resource for the data processing system does exist in the resource location code array table, it is determined which version of the resource was installed in the data processing system. Then, a presence detection procedure is performed for the resource in the data processing system. Afterward, it is determined whether the resource is present in the data processing system. In response to determining that the resource is present in the data processing system, an entry is created in a device tree for the resource based on the determined version of the resource. Finally, the device tree is cached in firmware.
