    • Graphic information, such as a subtitle, is recorded on a recording material, such as a motion picture film, by means of an externally applied surface layer of an organic film-forming polymer adapted to undergo a differential increase in solubility in an appropriate solvent as a result of imagewise heating so that, by contacting the differentially heated and thereby solubilized surface layer with the appropriate solvent, the relatively more soluble areas can be selectively removed, leaving the underlying areas of the recording material exposed. Heating can be effected directly within the surface layer by uniformly distributing throughout the polymer forming the same finely divided pigment or dye which, when exposed to a radiation image such as from a copying light, preferably a flashlight, absorbs such radiation and converts the same directly into heat. Where sufficient pigment or dye is present as to impart opacity to the surface layer, preferably an optical density of at least one, the graphic information can be formed by selective removal of the nonimage areas of the surface layer leaving an opaque relief image thereof to constitute the graphic information. Alternatively, the recording material with the partially removed surface layer thereon can be contacted with a liquid effectively bleaching the colorant material, i.e., the metallic silver or dye image, therein or, in the case of motion picture film, carrying a developed silver halide emulsion layer disintegrating the binder of that layer, or contains a dye which penetrates the exposed regions of the recording material.

    • A photothermographic method of reproducing an original bearing an image of material absorbing visible or infrared radiation and converting the same into heat in which the original is arranged with its image material in heat conductive relation with a recording layer containing a normally solvent soluble material adapted to react with a cross-linking agent and would be thereby rendered less soluble, a compound decomposing when heated to yield a cross-linking agent for said cross-linkable material and uniformly distributed therethrough a finely divided substance absorbing visible or infrared radiation and converting the same to heat, and while the original and layer are thus arranged one of them is uniformly exposed for a time not in excess of 10 2 seconds to light or infrared radiation sufficiently intense to decompose the compound in the areas of the layer corresponding to the nonimage areas of the original whereby such nonimage areas undergo a loss in solubility whereas the image areas remain relatively soluble. Reflectographic exposure with the radiation impinged upon the recording layer is preferred, with the layer containing a sufficient amount of the finely divided material to impart thereto an optical density of 0.2-0.8.

    • INFORMATION IS REPRODUCED BY THE STEPS OF EXPOSING TO A MAINLY VISIBLE LIGHT IMAGE A RECORDING LAYER CONTAINING AT LEAST ABOUT 80% BY WEIGHT OF A NORMALLY WATER-SOLUBLE POLYMER OF CERTAIN SELECTED TYPES WHICH IS SUBSTANTIALLY INSENSITIVE TO VISIBLE LIGHT BUT WHEN HEATED UNDERGOES A LOSS IN ITS NORMAL SOLUBILITY IN AQUEOUS SOLVENTS AND CONTACTING THE EXPOSED RECORDING LAYER WITH AN AQUEOUS SOLVENT FOR THE PURPOSE OF REMOVING THE UNEXPOSED SOLUBLE AREAS THEREOF THEREBY LEAVING A RELIEF IMAGE CORRESPONDING TO THE ORGINAL. THE RECORDING LAYER CONTAINS UNIFORMLY DISTRIBUTED THERETHROUGH A FINELY DIVIDED SUBSTANCE THAT ABSORBS AND CONVERTS VISIBLE RADIATION INTO HEAT, THE AMOUNT OF SUCH SUBSTANCE BEING SUFFICIENT TO IMPART TO THE RECORDING LAYER AN OPTICAL DENSITY OF ABOUT 0.2-1 IN THE EVENT REFLEX EXPOSURE IS PRACTICED OR OF AT LEAST ABOUT 0.2 IN THE EVENT THE EXPOSURE IS DIRECT. THE RECORDING LAYER IS SUBSTANTIALLY TRANSPARENT EXCEPT FOR THE RADIATION ABSORBING AND CONVERTING SUBSTANCE. THE TIME OF THE EXPOSURE DOES NOT EXCEED 10-2 SECONDS, AND THE INTENSITY OF THE RADIATION IS SUFFCIENTLY LARGE AS TO GENERATE WITHIN THAT TIME BY VIRTURE OF THE ABSORPTION AND CONVERSION EFFECT OF THE SUBSTANCE SUFFICIENT HEAT TO PRODUCE A LOSS IN SOLUBILITY IN THE POLYMER IN THE EXPOSED AREA.
