    • A helicopter tail rotor disposed on a crane for stabilizing a load suspended from the crane boom during a hoisting operation. The tail rotor is secured to a hoisting platform suspended from the upper end of the boom, the rotor blades being manually or automatically adjusted for turning the load horizontally in either direction such that the load is both stabilized during hoisting and easily directed to its assigned location. Alternately, the tail rotor is directly secured to the upper end of the boom such that the boom and crane body can be easily rotated about a fixed base, thereby avoiding the need for ring and pinion gears at the base of the crane, or reducing the load on such gears if they are used.

    • A transport rig for moving a heavy load, such as a concrete modular building unit, includes a pair of load-carrying frames supporting the front and rear ends of the load. Front and rear hydraulic cylinders are secured between corresponding front and rear load-carrying frames and running gear at the front and rear, respectively, of the transport rig to support the load above the ground. An adjustable cable extends from one load-carrying frame to the other beneath the load and is drawn tight to secure the load-carrying frames together. The opposite ends of the cable are connected to a pair of power-operated winch drums on one loadcarrying frame, and the cable is reeved in a closed loop around guide means on the front and rear load-carrying frames. The winch drums can be power-operated to shorten the effective length of the cable and pull the load-carrying frames tightly against the front and rear ends of the load. The load is removed from the transport rig by contracting the front and rear hydraulic cylinders to lower the load-carrying frames to place the load on a foundation or the like. The load-carrying frames may be shifted laterally in either direction to properly position the load directly above the foundation before the load is finally placed on the foundation. The cable is then disabled so the loadcarrying frames can be separately removed from the ends of the load.

    • A pair of precast concrete building units are joined together to form a modular concrete house. Each concrete building unit includes a floor slab, upright load-bearing exterior walls joined with the perimeter of the floor slab, and a sloping roof cast integrally with the tops of the exterior walls. The building units are arranged so that the roof of each unit slopes upwardly toward the other unit, with the elevated ends of the roofs meeting to form an inverted V-shaped pitch roof. Interior walls are cast integrally with the exterior walls and the roof to divide the building units into separate rooms. The bottoms of the interior walls are spaced above the floor slab so that no loads are transmitted to the floor slab by the walls, and plumbing and wiring are run through the space between the bottom of the interior walls and the floor slab. A reinforcing cage formed from welded wire mesh is embedded in each exterior wall.

    • A novel heat exchanger is formed by using alternating smooth and dimpled, thin, thermally conductive strips which are wound in a spiral to form the closed passageways for fluid between the strips and retain between an outer retaining and fluid distribution ring and an inner retaining and fluid distribution ring. The strips have means for sealing and insulating the periphery in a fluid tight manner. The dimpled strips have dimples extending from each side of the strip the size determining the fluid capacity of the passageways. The smooth and dimpled strips are used in pairs enabling two, four, etc., fluids to be passed either in concurrent or counter-current flow so as to provide an efficient heat exchanger which may be easily taken apart and cleaned for good service.
