    • In a head protection airbag device according to the invention, non-inflating portions of an airbag includes a blocking portion which covers the vehicle interior side of windows when inflation of the airbag is completed. One blocking portion includes a downward movement inhibiting portion catching a passenger's head and inhibiting its downward movement when the head moves downward while moving toward the vehicle exterior and touches the blocking portion when inflation of the airbag is completed. The blocking portion comprises overlapping vehicle interior side and the vehicle exterior side portions which are mutually connected, with a portion of a vehicle interior member by the upper edge made to be the downward movement inhibiting portion. The downward movement inhibiting portion is connected at both the front and rear edges to the vehicle exterior member of the blocking portion, allowing the upper edge of the downward movement inhibiting portion to be a catching edge which can be separated from the vehicle exterior member when catching the head.

    • The head-protecting airbag apparatus of the present invention includes an airbag and a guide bracket. The guide bracket includes two guide walls and a joint wall, thereby has a generally U-shaped cross section, and accommodates the folded airbag between the two guide walls. The guide bracket is located above a pillar portion while being covered by an airbag cover, and serves to guide the inflating airbag toward vehicle's inner side and prevent the airbag from entering vehicle's outer side of the pillar garnish. The dimension of a clearance between the two guide walls is set such that: a gap arises between the housed airbag and at least one of the guide walls, thereby the airbag is allowed to inflate in the gap in the initial stage of airbag inflation; and that the deployment direction of the airbag is controlled by the guide walls, toward vehicle's inner side. In the head-protecting airbag apparatus of the present invention, the airbag housed in the upper periphery of windows smoothly protrudes inward of vehicle without providing any gas-leakage preventing means such as a reinforcing patch.

    • The head-protecting airbag according to the present invention is formed by hollow-weaving method, and includes a gas admissive portion inflatable with inflation gas to separate its vehicle's inner wall and vehicle's outer wall, and a non-admissive portion admitting no inflation gas. The non-admissive portion includes mounting portions arranged in the upper edge of the airbag, and a marginal portion located around the gas admissive portion. The non-admissive portion partially has a two-ply structure where the hollow-woven cloth material separates into vehicle's inner cloth part and outer cloth part from the marginal portion having a one-ply structure. At least one of the mounting portions is formed by folding back a region of the two-ply cloth part to have a four-ply structure. The head-protecting airbag of the present invention remains stably attached to the vehicle body without breakage of the mounting portions even when a strong tension force rapidly and directly acts on mounting-hole peripheries of the mounting portions upon airbag deployment.

    • In the airbag device of the present invention, a cylinder-shaped inflator includes a discharge side end portion having a plurality of gas discharge ports. The discharge side end is connected with the airbag utilizing a clamp by being inserted into a tubular gas inlet port of the airbag. Each of gas discharge ports includes a circumferential opening and an end face opening. The end face opening emits inflation gas in an axial direction of the inflator when the inflator is connected with the gas inlet port. Between each of the circumferential openings is a supporting plane for supporting an inner surface of the gas inlet port. The discharge side end includes a guide portion for redirecting inflation gas flowing from inside to directions perpendicular to the axis of the inflator when the gas inlet port is not connected with the inflator, such that inflation gas is discharged from the circumferential openings of the gas discharge ports. The airbag of the present invention dispenses with a diffuser and facilitates a connecting work of a cylinder-shaped inflator and an airbag.

The airbag includes an inflatable shielding section that covers an inboard side of the window at full airbag deployment, a supporting inflatable region that is in gas communication with the shielding section and deployable between an outboard side of a vicinity of an upper end of the shielding section and the member of the vehicle body structure in an upper area of the window, and delaying means that delays inflation of the supporting inflatable region relative to the shielding section. The supporting inflatable region inflates after the shielding section does between the shielding section and the member of the vehicle body structure, and supports the outboard side of the vicinity of the upper end of the shielding section.
