    • An apparatus for evaluating perfusion adjacent a skin surface includes a housing having first and second interior regions. The housing is configured to engage the skin surface. The apparatus also includes a plunger located in the first region of the housing for applying pressure to a first zone of the skin surface, a vacuum connection coupled to the second region of the housing to permit suction to be applied to the second region of the housing and to a second zone of the skin surface, a first temperature sensor for generating an output signal related to the temperature of the first zone of the skin surface, a second temperature sensor for generating an output signal related to the temperature of the second zone of the skin surface, and a processor circuit coupled to the first and second temperature sensors for determining a differential temperature between the first and second zones of the skin surface to provide an indication of perfusion adjacent the skin surface.

    • A support system that reduces the likelihood of breakdown of human skin, and hence formation of decubitus ulcers, is disclosed. The system comprises two sheets of flexible material bonded together to provide a plurality of separate cells that are capable of being alternately and repeatedly inflated and deflated by means of a fluid contained in the cells. The flexible material is impermeable to the fluid. The cells are of a size and shape and with an intercellular spacing such that in at least one of the width and length of the system, the distance between centers of adjacent inflated cells is less than the human two-point discrimination threshold and the support system is capable of supporting a human body with bottoming out either of or between the inflated cells. In particular embodiments, the support system is in the form of a mattress. The support system may be used with persons who are confined to bed, wheelchairs or the like for periods of time or who are otherwise fully or partially immobilized, including for therapeutic reasons.

    • Dilution stack sampling apparatus, for analyzing gaseous components of a gas stream from a stack containing particulate material of varying size therein. A passageway has a first end communicating at an angle with the probe intermediate its ends to receive a sample of gas and to change its flow direction to inertially remove most of the particulate material. An eductor connected to the second end of the passageway mixes dilution air with the sample of gas to provide a diluted sample. A filter upstream of the second end of the passageway removes remaining particulate material from the sample of gas which is not the inertially separated. Instrument air can be provided in a back-flow direction at the upstream side of the filter to periodically remove particulate material from the filter. The diluted sample and the dilution gas are supplied to gas analyzer, and the mass flow rate of the dilution gas and diluted gas are measured. The amount of the dilution gas and the dilution sample are compared in the gas analyzer to determine the ratio of each measured gas in the sample to the total gas sample.
