    • In the representative embodiments of the present invention disclosed herein, a hand-held control reel is provided with a drum for carrying a plurality of parallel control lines adapted to be connected to selected points on a kite. By releasably coupling a crank to the drum, the control lines can be quickly wound onto the drum when the kite is to be pulled in; but the crank will be disengaged to prevent the crank from striking the user when the lines are being unspooled to let the kite out. To regulate the speed at which the control lines can be unreeled, the assembly is provided with a trigger-actuated brake. Alternative line-control mechanisms are shown which are cooperatively arranged to selectively vary the length of one control line in relation to the others for directing the kite into various maneuvers. Of particular significance, the new and improved reel assembly is provided with an arm rest adapted to engage the underside of the user''s forearm and a pistol grip for positioning the user''s index finger adjacent to the brake control trigger.

    • A closed, self-sustaining power system for the operation of valves includes a first means for storing and containing an expandable system which means communicates with a responsive means of a valve system to enable the valve system to be opened, closed or controlled. A controlled energy means transmits energy to the expandable medium to thereby cause an increase in pressure in the responsive means of the valve system which enables the valve system to respond as desired. After actuation of the responsive means of the valve system, the means for storing is enabled to communicate with a reservoir means which thereby increases the area of the closed system to reduce the pressure in the closed system sufficiently to terminate actuation of the responsive means of the valve system.

    • A face or face insert (40) for a golf club head (20) is disclosed herein. The face (40) has an interior surface (40b) with a first thickness section (200) and a second thickness region (205). The first thickness section (200) preferably has a thickness that is at least 0.025 inch greater than the thickness of the second thickness region (205). In a most preferred embodiment, the first thickness section (200) has an X shape that is rotated around the Y axis (500) by at least 10 degrees. In another preferred embodiment, the face has a first thickness section (200), a second thickness region (205), and a central region (400) having a third thickness. The face or face insert (40) with variable thickness allows for a face or face insert (40) with less mass in a golf club head (20) that conforms to the United States Golf Association regulations.

    • Inertial energy storage apparatus having two contrarotating rotors the fellies of which include a number of thin rings of high tensile strength material, such as glasses or embedded fiber composites, arranged in concentric shells, the ratio of the Young''s Modulus to the density of the material of each ring being proportional to the nth power of its mean radius, where n is not equal to zero, so that the radial separations between successive shells of rings produced by centrifugal force are reduced as compared with those produced when n is zero (e.g., all rings of the same material). The rotors have alternator-motors in their hubs, by means of which they can be brought to speed, and by means of which the inertial energy stored in them can be extracted in the form of variable-frequency alternating output voltage. This output voltage may be converted by a solid-state cycloconverter to alternating current of selectively variable frequency by means of which to power, for instance, the threephase, squirrel-cage wheel motors of a non-pollution-producing vehicle.
