    • A power converting apparatus and a power converting method for driving a high voltage AC motor at a variable speed. Conventional invertor systems cannot solve technical subjects such as energy conservation, resource conservation, miniaturization, efficiency promotion and voltage and current waveform distortion suppression for improvement in environment needed by the market, and cannot solve another technical subject of improvement in redundancy such that, upon failure, operation is performed with a normal part. In the present invention, a power converting apparatus of a multiple three-phase pulse width modulation cycloconverter system for driving a high voltage AC motor at a variable speed is used, and bidirectional semiconductor switches are controlled so that voltages of AC outputs to be outputted to single-phase AC terminals of three-phase/single-phase pulse width modulation cycloconverters may have a same phase in each of units but electric angles of basic wave voltage phases may be different by 120 degrees from each other among the three units to drive a high voltage AC motor. If one of the cycloconverters fails, then the single-phase AC terminals of the failed cycloconverter are short-circuited and three sets of switches each consisting of two bidirectional semiconductor switches connected to three-phase AC terminals of the cycloconverters of the other two units in the same group as the failed cycloconverter are successively rendered conducting one by one set at equal time intervals to short-circuit the three sets of the bidirectional semiconductor switches to drive the high voltage AC motor at a variable speed.

    • It is an object to provide a winding switching device of a three-phase AC motor having a small size at a low cost in which a time required for switching a winding is shortened and the number of semiconductor switch units is decreased as much as possible. In a winding switching device of a three-phase AC motor including an AC motor in which a winding having each phase is formed by a plurality of windings and a connecting terminal connecting the windings to each other and both terminals of the winding having the phase are provided on an outside of a motor, winding switching means for properly switching the connecting terminal, and a variable frequency power source for supplying a variable voltage having a variable frequency to the AC motor, the winding switching means is constituted by a plurality of three-phase rectifying means connecting one of ends of the winding having the phase to the variable frequency power source and connecting the other end and the connecting terminal to an input terminal on an AC side of the three-phase rectifying means for each phase, and a semiconductor switch provided to open and close both ends on a DC output side of the three-phase rectifying means.

    • A noise attenuation circuit is used in a motor drive system. The motor drive system includes a variable frequency drive having a pulse width modulated inverter converting DC power from a DC bus to three-phase power output on three-phase conductors for driving a motor. The noise attenuation circuit comprises a common-mode transformer including a common mode choke having a core, with first, second and third choke windings on the core, each connected in series with one of the three phase conductors, and a fourth winding on the core. A three-phase iron core transformer creates a neutral point representing common mode voltage. The iron core transformer has three primary windings connected in a "wye" configuration to the three phase conductors. The fourth winding has a start connected to the neutral point and an end operatively connected to the DC bus to force a current, dependent on the voltage of the neutral point relative to the DC bus, in the fourth winding of the common mode transformer in an opposite direction to cancel main common mode current.

    • A noise attenuation circuit is disclosed for use in a motor drive system. The motor drive system includes a pulse width modulated inverter providing three phase power output on three phase conductors for driving a motor. The noise attenuation circuit includes a common mode transformer including a common mode choke having a core, with first, second and third choke windings on the core, each connected in series with one of the three phase conductors, and a fourth winding on the core. A three phase iron core transformer creates a neutral point representing common mode voltage. The iron core transformer has three primary windings connected in a wye configuration. A capacitor circuit is connected between the iron core transformer and the three phase conductors to prevent saturation of the iron core transformer during pulsed DC operating conditions. The fourth winding is connected between the neutral point and the DC bus and develops a common mode voltage that is equal and opposite to that existing in the system. This common mode voltage, when impressed across the three choke windings, effectively cancels the systems' common mode voltage thereby reducing the common mode current significantly.
