    • The invention provides a liquid crystal display device having a transmissive display region and a reflective display region in one dot region, and capable of obtaining a bright and high-contrast display in both a reflective display and a transmissive display. In particular, a liquid crystal display device according to the present invention can include a reflective display region and a transmissive display region provided in one dot region, and a reflection layer provided in the reflective display region. A pixel electrode, a TFT element for driving the pixel electrode, a capacitive electrode connected to the pixel electrode, an electrode part arranged to oppose the capacitive electrode via an insulating layer are formed in the dot region. Further, in the display regions within the dot region, the capacitive electrode or the capacitive line can be arranged at a position where it overlaps, in plan view, the inclined region between the reflective display region and the transflective display region.

    • An optical modulator for modulating light emitted from a signal light source has a substrate having electrooptic effect, an optical waveguide of a Mach-Zehnder type formed on the substrate, an electrode formed on the substrate to control light propagated in the optical waveguide, a light guiding unit for guiding light radiated or leaking from the optical waveguide, an interference light generating means for making light emitted from the light guiding unit and signal light leaking from the optical waveguide interfere with each other to generate interference light, and for emitting the interference light from an end surface of the substrate, a photo-detector for monitoring the interference light obtained by the interference light generating means, and a signal controlling circuit for controlling an operating point of the optical modulator according to a change of the interference light monitored by the photo-detector, thereby stably controlling the operating point of the optical modulator while facilitating a design of the mechanism.

    • A motor control device for controlling the driving and regenerative operation of a motor includes CPU, ROM, RAM and a back-up RAM. An electric power is normally supplied from a subsidiary battery through a second regulator to the back-up RAM. An electric power is also supplied to the CPU, the ROM and the RAM through a main switch and a first regulator, on the one hand, and through the first regulator and a transistor which is turned ON when the number of revolutions of the motor becomes equal to or larger than a predetermined value, on the other hand. Therefore, even if the main switch is opened during traveling of a vehicle at a high speed, the counter-electromotive force of the motor can be decreased by the motor control device which is supplied with the electric power through the transistor to maintain its function, thereby preventing damage to an inverter.

    • A multiaxial optical coupler for use in a device using an LiNbO3 substrate, which is reliable over a wide temperature range and capable of reducing coupling loss. A capillary has a plurality of linear through holes formed therethrough in a manner each inclined with respect to the central axis of the capillary such that the extension line of the central axis of the linear through hole extends through the center of a lens. A plurality of optical fibers are inserted into the linear through holes, respectively. This construction enables the optical axis of an optical beam emitted from each of the optical fibers within the capillary to pass through the center of the lens and reach the end face of a corresponding one of the optical waveguides. Similarly, the construction enables the optical axis of an optical beam emitted from the end face of each of the optical waveguides on the substrate to pass through the center of the lens and reach a corresponding one of the optical fibers within the capillary. The central axis of each of the linear guide holes is slightly inclined with respect to the optical axis of the lens. However, this inclination angle causes very little optical coupling loss.
