    • A method for installing an elevator may include stopping an elevator car or partially completed elevator car in the upper part of an elevator shaft; rigging first portions of hoisting ropes between the car and diverting pulleys in the upper part of the shaft so that the first portions pass via the diverting pulleys in the upper part of the shaft and first diverting pulleys on the car; moving the car to the lower part of the shaft, while supplying ropes from rope reels to the first portions between the car and the diverting pulleys in the upper part of the shaft; and rigging second portions of the hoisting ropes between the car and diverting pulleys in the lower part of the shaft so that the second portions pass via the diverting pulleys in the lower part of the shaft and second diverting pulleys on the car.

    • An elevator in which hoisting ropes pass under first and second diverting pulleys, in which a suspension device crosses a line between guide rails. The first and second diverting pulleys may be mounted on the suspension device such that the first and second diverting pulleys may be on a first side and a second side, respectively, in which the sides being opposite, of the line between the guide rails. A frame of the elevator car may be mounted on the suspension device which is supported by a first suspension point and a second suspension point.     • An elevator includes hoisting ropes and a compensating device. The hoisting ropes include first rope portions under a first rope tension that go upward from an elevator car and second rope portions under a different, second rope tension that go downward from the elevator car. The compensating device acts in substantially opposite directions on the first and second rope portions in order to do one or more of the following: equalize the first, second, or first and second rope tensions; compensate the rope tensions between the first and second rope tensions; equalize rope elongation in the first, second, or first and second rope portions; compensate the rope elongations between the first and second rope portions; and render a ratio of the first rope tension to the second rope tension substantially constant. The compensating device produces an auxiliary force acting substantially in a same direction as the first rope tension.

    • A method for tripping safety gear of an elevator, at a speed lower than a gripping speed of the elevator may include: slowing a rope sheave of an overspeed governor of the elevator using a device adapted to slow the rope sheave; disconnecting an actuator connected to the overspeed governor from movement of the rope sheave when the device slows the rope sheave; and tripping the safety gear in an overspeed situation using a rope driving the overspeed governor via the rope sheave. An appliance for tripping safety gear of an elevator may include: an overspeed governor; a rope sheave of the overspeed governor; a device adapted to slow the rope sheave; and an actuator connected to the overspeed governor that is arranged to disconnect from movement of the rope sheave when the device adapted to slow the rope sheave acts to slow the movement of the rope sheave.
