    • The invention relates to a method of lubricating warp yarn ends arranged in sheet form (W) on the dry side of the drying process (16) as part of the process of preparing a loom beam (22) on a slasher. The method comprises providing a pair of rotating porous lubricating rods (40, 42) arranged on a frame (44, 46) attached to a frame portion (88) of the slasher. The rotating porous rods are provided in the form of a hollow rod having an after lubricant surface (B), an inner lubricant distribution layer A, and a boundary region (32) in which a flow control membrane (C) is formed. The above described construction provides a highly accurate flow control and metering of the lubricant from the interior of the rod outwardly to the application surface. The porous construction of the rods (40, 42) makes them particularly advantageous for employment in a rotating appartus when the warp yarn sheet (W) passes through in a serpentine configuration to contact both sides of the warp yarn sheets with the staggered rotating lubricating rods. The method is particularly advantageous for lubricating a warp yarn sheet (112) in a complex configuration wherein two individual warp yarn sheets contact each other without intermeshing.

    • A method and apparatus are disclosed for use in the process of treating yarns which includes passing the yarns through a slashing machine (10) and applying a sizing solution to the yarns (20) arranged in side-by-side sheet form, (W), in preparation for weaving on a loom followed by drying the yarns, wherein the apparatus comprises a lease rod (A) for splitting yarns into sheets which includes a porous outer layer (32) and yarn contacting surface (34) having a capacity to sweat a liquid lubricant at a sufficiently precise rate as to control the amount of lubricant wetting the yarn contacting surface. Sticking of sizing material to the yarn contacting surface as occurs with wet yarns coated with concentrated sizing solutions is avoided without weakening the size coatings on the yarns. A source of lubricant is provided (at B) and supply means (C) supplies lubricant from said source (B) in response to the operation and speed of said slashing machine to sweat a proper amount of lubricant onto said yarn contacting surface avoiding overwetting of yarn. Alternately, compressed air may be provided (at B) instead of lubricant and admitted to the interior of the hollow lease rod for blowing off any size coating tending to accumulate on the yarn contacting surface. Sleeve (41) is adjusted over pipe (30) up to the edge of sheets (W1, W2) to expose only that length of porous yarn surface (34) that actually contacts the yarn.

    • An apparatus and method for sizing warp yarn utilized in preparing a loom beam for weaving are disclosed. A porous application roll (A) is utilized for applying a sizing material onto a sheet of warp yarns (12) passing between a pressure roll (30) and the application roll. The application roll includes a continuous cylindrical porous application surface (B) formed around the entire periphery of the roll having an extent at least as great as the warp yarn sheet width. An intermediate porous distribution layer (C) is provided next to the application surface (B) for disbursing the sizing material onto the application surface. A porous flow control membrane (D) having a pore size less than that of the distribution layer occupies a boundary region for metering the sizing material. When the passage of warp yarns is discontinued, the application roll (A) is moved to an idle position by an actuator (38). In the idle position, liquid (72) is made to contact the application surface to maintain it in a moist condition. A wiper blade (80) is utilized to remove excess liquid. The excess liquid is removed before the application roll again is used to apply sizing material, so that the sizing material is not diluted.
