    • A system and methodology for control of a switched reluctance electric machine comprising: a switched reluctance electric machine including a sensor generating and transmitting a sensor signal indicative of an operating characteristic; a controller operatively coupled to the switched reluctance motor and the sensor; and the controller executing a method. The method comprises: probing a selected diagnostic phase with a pulse injection process; measuring an actual operating characteristic of the switched reluctance electric machine; computing an inductance based on the actual operating characteristic and correlating the inductance with a position to formulate an estimated position; modeling the switched reluctance electric machine to formulate an observer-based estimated position; selecting at one of the estimated position, the observer-based estimated position, and a combination thereof to formulate a selected position of the switched reluctance machine; and controlling said switched reluctance machine based on said selected position and a command.

    • A method of interfacing an electromagnetic sensor with a controller in a motor control system, the method including: applying an excitation signal to the electromagnetic sensor; receiving a first electromagnetic sensor output signal based on the excitation signal, the first electromagnetic sensor signal comprising an amplitude modulated signal corresponding to a position of a rotor of the electromagnetic sensor; and receiving a second electromagnetic sensor output signal based on the excitation signal, the second electromagnetic sensor signal comprising another amplitude modulated signal corresponding to the position of the rotor of the electromagnetic sensor. The method also includes sampling the first electromagnetic sensor signal and the second electromagnetic sensor signal at about an instance synchronous with the excitation signal to demodulate the first electromagnetic sensor signal and the second electromagnetic sensor signal and decoding a resultant of the sampling to identify the position of a rotor of the electromagnetic sensor.

    • Disclosed herein is a method for parameter identification in a switched reluctance electric machine comprising: operating the switched reluctance electric machine in response to a desired command; and measuring an actual operating characteristic of the switched reluctance electric machine. The method also includes: modeling the switched reluctance electric machine to formulate an estimated operating characteristic based on the desired command; comparing the actual operating characteristic and the estimated operating characteristic to formulate an error there between; and determining a parameter estimate for the switched reluctance machine based on the error and a previous parameter estimate. Also disclosed herein is a system for estimating a parameter for a switched reluctance electric machine comprising: a switched reluctance electric machine including a sensor generating and transmitting a sensor signal indicative of a sensed characteristic; and a controller operatively coupled to the sensors executing the abovementioned methodology.

    • An exemplary embodiment of the invention is a method of controlling a motor in an electric power steering system. The method includes obtaining a motor control signal having an initial duty cycle and linearizing the initial duty cycle to obtain a secondary duty cycle. An offset is added to the secondary duty cycle to obtain an adjusted duty cycle. The motor is controlled using the adjusted duty cycle. An alternative embodiment is a torque linearization device for linearizing torque produced by a motor in response to a motor control signal having an initial duty cycle. The torque linearization device includes a comparator for receiving the initial duty cycle and comparing the initial duty cycle to a threshold. A linearization table converts the initial duty cycle to a linearized duty cycle. A selector receives the initial duty cycle and the linearized duty cycle and selects one of the initial duty cycle and the linearized duty cycle as a secondary duty cycle in response to the comparing.

    • A method for determining phase current for each of a plurality of individual phase coils of a switched reluctance machine (SRM) is disclosed. In an exemplary embodiment, the method includes determining the current passing through a first resistive element and a second resistive element in an SRM drive circuit. A conduction mode of the SRM drive circuit is determined, the conduction mode being based upon an ON/OFF state of each of a pair of switching transistors controlling current through each of the plurality of individual phase coils. The phase current through each of the plurality of individual phase coils is then calculated, based upon the conduction mode and the determined current passing through said first and second resistive elements.
