    • The present invention relates generally to a transducer positioning and adjusting apparatus and, more particularly, to an improved system for accurately and reproducibly positioning a transducer head in vertical relationship to a series of parallel horizontal tracks on a recording medium such as magnetic video tape. The apparatus comprises a frame upon which the elements of the system are mounted and with respect to which they are vertically aligned. A cam having a plurality of horizontally planar steps formed about its upper surface is rotatably mounted upon said frame and a vertically moveable bearing post, which is secured at one end to the transducer head, is held in continuous contact with the stepping surfaces formed on the cam. A ball bearing which contacts the underside of the cam substantially beneath the stepping surface upon which the bearing post is held in contact is utilized to support the cam on the mounting frame and maintain said stepping surface in precise vertical alignment therewith. A horizontally slidable wedge mounted on said frame upon which the cam supporting ball bearing rides may be utilized to vertically adjust said cam bearing post with respect to the mounting frame. A commutator disk secured to said cam in a predetermined relationship with respect to the stepping surfaces formed thereon electrically signals the position of said cam with respect to said bearing post. A logic circuit is also disclosed which controls the operation of a cam drive motor in response to the signals received from said commutator disk.

    • The improvement to the tying apparatus consists of an intermittent rotatable pneumatic drive to operate the apparatus in place of the electric drive system. The pneumatic drive includes a rotary actuator (20) with a gear arrangement and one-way clutch (26) that provides the 360 degree rotation required to operate the apparatus. A control valve (36) with a single pilot control energizes the actuator clockwise for functional operation and counterclockwise to reset, ready for a subsequent operation. A roller actuated limit valve (42) is in communication with the apparatus program plate and, when mechanically triggered, energizes the pilot portion of the control valve, driving the program plate a full 360 degrees, completing a functional operation of encircling, gathering, twisting and cutting tie material around an article, such as a bag, sack, or other like-open mouth articles. A pneumatic valve (48) with a pushbutton (50) bypasses the manual trigger system of the apparatus in the event of malfunction or jam, allowing the device to reset itself into the ready to operate position.

    • An improved technique for the assembly of motors of the type having a printed armature that rotates in a flat, annular air gap between a magnet assembly and a magnetic flux plate, wherein the size of the air gap is accurately maintained at preselected value. In one embodiment of the invention, a precision shim, having a thickness the same as the preselected air gap size, is placed on a flat work surface, the magnet assembly is placed on the shim, and a motor housing is placed over the magnet assembly and shim. An epoxy fill in the housing is compressed as the housing is pressed down over the magnet assembly until a reference surface on the housing contacts the work surface. In an alternate embodiment of the invention, an inner flux plate is formed to include a plurality of tines, so shaped and sized that, when the inner flux plate and the magnet assembly are bonded together and inserted in the housing, the tines provide for a force fit in the housing. The magnet assembly and inner flux plate are pressed into the housing by a press tool with lugs that project from a flat surface of the tool by a distance equal to the preselected size of the air gap.

    • A hand held portable twist tie apparatus which has a frame (20), a drive motor (44) and controls. A set of reduction drive gears (68) reduce the motor speed and drive a gear cluster with turntable (74). A twister (94) is rotated by a drive train (114) that intermeshes at the proper time with the gear cluster. A spring loaded shuttling carriage (126) slides along the twister and contains arms (130) that swing around the product and guide twist tie material (76) to enclose the product to be tied. A feed transport arm (142) advances the tie material and cuts it to the appropriate length for complete encircling, tightening and twisting by the above elements.
