    • A torch suitable for use in recreational applications, such as with patios or decks, includes a gas cylinder, a holder for the cylinder, a pole to support the holder and a burner for producing a stable, visible flame. The burner includes one or more holes for injecting primary air near a flow-controlled gas orifice and a burn tip spaced from the orifice. A bowl is mounted about the burn tip and is preferably shaped for providing wind resistance and admitting secondary air at its exit to produce a stable, visible flame. In the preferred embodiment, the enclosure is made from plastic, and has a socket for receiving the pole. An oil, such as citronella oil, may be mixed with the propane or other gas in the cylinder to scent the area in which the torch is used.

    • A cordless blind having a mechanism for introducing a variable amount of friction into the operation of the cordless blind is disclosed. The cordless blind includes a spring motor operatively connected to a cord connected to the window covering of the blind. Pulling and releasing the cord expands and retracts the blind. In order to introduce additional resistance to movement into the system when retracting the blind and not when expanding the blind, variable friction mechanisms or retarders, including one-way bearings, and one-way braking arms, are used for introducing friction into the system only when desired.

    • A window covering includes a plurality of slats, each slat including a slat base derived from a felt batt and, in one preferred embodiment, a fabric layer. The slat base is thermally treated to form a polymer matrix and can be molded into any desired shape. The starting felt batt includes at least two types of thermoplastic fibers, one having a lower melting point than the other. The thermal forming includes heating the felt batt to a temperature sufficient to melt the lower melting fibers to form a polymer matrix which at least partially envelops the fibers of the higher melting component. A method of fabricating a slat for a window covering is also disclosed. In its most basic form the method includes the steps of thermally forming the slat base and molding it into the desired shape. The optional step of securing a layer of fabric to the slat base is also disclosed.

    • Disclosed is a spring motor and control for use especially with window blinds. The motor comprises a storage drum having a first axis, an output drum mounted for rotation about a second axis parallel to and spaced from the first axis. A spring member is connected to and between the storage drum and the output drum to form a spring motor. The spring motor has laterally extending, spaced apart drum supports on opposite sides of the drums to support them for rotation. A coupled drive is connected to the storage and output drum whereby rotation of one of the drums in a first direction about its axis effects rotation of the other of the drums about its axis and in an opposite direction to cause winding and unwinding of the spring member between the drums. A drive actuator is connected to the coupled drive to effect rotation of the drums, and an adjustable friction member is engageable with one of the coupled drive and the drive actuator to adjustably alter the force necessary to effect movement of the coupled drive.

    • A spark igniter mechanism is provided for a torch having a burn tube. The spark igniter mechanism includes a one-piece housing and an igniter which is held against the burn tube by the housing. The igniter includes a spark wire which extends through an opening formed in a wall of the burn tube. The spark igniter mechanism further includes a fastener which secures the housing is to the burn tube. In addition, an adhesive may help to further secure the housing to the burn tube. The spark igniter mechanism of the present invention facilitates the use of a single igniter design with a plurality of torches. Furthermore, the mechanism is inexpensive to manufacture and assemble.
