    • A media application for providing outputs (e.g., audio outputs) in response to inputs received from an input device is provided. The media application may connect input mechanisms of an input device with parameters of channel strips (e.g., which may define output sounds) using an intermediate screen object. The media application may first assign an input mechanism to a screen object, and separately map a screen object to a channel strip parameter. The media application may map a screen object to several channel strips simultaneously such that, based on the value of the screen object, the volume of each of the several channel strips changes. The media application may provide a graphical representation of available channel strips using layers. As the media application accesses a channel strip, the appearance of the portion of the layer associated with the channel strip may change. The media application may also allow the patches, which may include several channel strips, to survive after a new patch is selected instead.

    • A method and system for measuring optical scattering characteristics includes coupling a continuous wave laser excitation signal to an optical fiber. Radiation backscattered by the optical fiber in response to the coupled excitation signal is detected to produce a backscattered radiation signal. The backscattered radiation signal is mixed with the excitation signal to produce a mixed signal. The mixed signal is filtered to reduce the magnitude of frequencies other than conjugate mixing frequencies relative to the conjugate mixing frequencies. The filtered signal is digitized and the magnitude of backscattered radiation from a specific portion of the fiber is calculated based on the digitized signal. The temperature of a specific portion of the fiber can be determined from the magnitude of the backscattered radiation.

    • A method and system of controlling access to a hardware or software feature provided by a host is disclosed. An application seeking authorization to access a feature transmits a credential and an index to a host agent within the host. The index is associated with the requested feature. The host agent reads credential validation data from a storage location corresponding to the index in a non-volatile storage device in communication with the host. The validity of the credential is determined based on the credential validation data, and an authorization is transmitted if the credential is valid. A third party can control the outcome of the validity determination by sending an instruction to the host to replace the credential validation data with invalid data that causes the validity test to fail. The third party can also control the non-volatile storage device data used by the application to calculate the credential.
