    • A patient support system has a fluidizable surface formed by air fluidizing a mass of fluidizable material. The fluidizable material is contained by a member which is at least partially collapsible so as to facilitate the patient's ingress and egress to and from the support system. The collapsible member can comprise an air impermeable panel which can form an inflatable elastic wall having one or more internal webs defining separately pressurizable compartments. The fluidizable surface can be formed by a plurality of fluidizable cells disposed and attached atop an air permeable support. Each of these cells is detachably removable from the support for ease of cleaning and replacement. A blower inflates the sacks, the inflatable elastic wall embodiments and the fluidizable material via a network including manifolds, valves, and flexible tubing. A microprocessor controls actuation of the various valves and the blower according to signals inputted by operating personnel or supplied by various sensors which monitor the patient support system.

    • A proportional flow control valve is provided for use with low air loss patient support systems. The valve includes a valve housing having an inlet and an outlet defined therein with a valve passage defined through the housing between the inlet and outlet. A chamber is defined in the housing, the chamber further including a nipple cavity defined in the bottom thereof and a cam stop extending from the bottom into the chamber. A valve spool is rotatably disposed within the chamber. The valve spool includes an alignment nipple fitting into the nipple cavity and a cam defined on the bottom thereof through a predetermined rotational arc. The cam and cam stop cooperate to limit the rotational arc of the valve spool within the chamber. A proportional flow control groove is defined in the valve spool. The flow control groove establishes linear air flow through the valve depending on the angular displacement of the spool within the chamber. A motor is provided mounted to the housing to rotate the valve spool within the chamber and, preferably, a torque limiting clutch is disposed between the motor and valve spool. The valve spool further includes a friction reducing substance coated thereon or impregnated therein, such as teflon or the like, to reduce binding of the valve spool within the chamber.

    • A patient support system has a first surface formed by one or more of a choice of structures. A fluidizable surface formed by air fluidizing a mass of fluidizable material is disposed adjacent the first surface. Examples of structures suitable for the first surface include a conventional mattress, with or without springs, polyurethane foam, and a plurality of inflatable sacks. The structure forming the first surface can be disposed on an articulatable member. The two surfaces are disposed end to end, and preferably the fluidized material supports at least the buttocks of the patient. the fluidizable material is laterally restrained by a member which is at least partially, vertically collapsible so as to facilitate the patient's ingress and egress to and from the support system. An interface member such as an inflatable sack, a non-rigid panel or a polyurethane foam member forms the part of the lateral restraint member which connects the two surfaces. The collapsible member can comprise an air impermeable panel which can form an inflatable elastic wall having one or more internal webs defining separately pressurizable compartments. A blower inflates the sacks, the elastic wall, and the fluidizable material via a network including manifolds, valves, and flexible tubing. A microprocessor controls actuation of the various valves and the blower according to signals inputted by operating personnel or supplied by various sensors which monitor the patient support system.

    • The present invention relates to a vibratory patient support system for providing therapeutic vibrational action or forces to a patient suffering from a respiratory ailment. The vibratory patient support system includes a rigid support frame such as a bed frame, a plurality of inflatable sacs supported upon the support frame with each sac having an upper surface so that the plurality of sacs forms a patient support surface. The inflatable sacs are pressurized and maintained at a predetermined pressure. This predetermined pressure may be a patient height and weight specific pressure profile. A vibrating component is provided separate from the apparatus for pressurizing and maintaining the air sacs at the predetermined pressure. The vibrating component vibrates at least a portion of the patient support surface at a predetermined frequency. In this manner, the plurality of air sacs are maintained at their predetermined pressure and the portion of the patient support surface is simultaneously vibrated at the predetermined frequency. The vibrating means are further variably controllable so that an operator can vary the frequency, magnitude or amplitude, and duration of the vibrating therapy. The vibratory patient support system may include a specialty low air loss bed configuration including vibrating means for vibrating a portion of the patient support surface of the low air loss sacs at the predetermined frequency.
