    • Various designs of a spiral accumulator apparatus are disclosed for controlling the flow of articles. The accumulator may have an infeed conveyor driven in a first direction to convey articles therealong in the first direction along a first path that is at least partially curved, and an outfeed conveyor driven in an opposite direction to convey articles therealong in the opposite direction along a second path that is at least partially curved. The infeed and outfeed conveyors may be spaced apart and generally parallel along at least a portion of the first and second paths so as to define a space therebetween. A movable transport member may be disposed generally across and movable along the space, and an article transfer member may be carried by the transport member and operably disposed between the infeed and outfeed conveyors to transfer articles between the infeed conveyor and the outfeed conveyor. A transport member mover may be connected to the transport member. A differential drive mechanism may be located at a fixed position spaced from the transport member, the differential drive mechanism including an output portion for contacting and moving the transport member mover when a relative speed difference exists between the infeed and outfeed conveyors thereby causing the transport member to travel in the direction of the faster of the infeed and outfeed conveyors. The differential drive mechanism may include a plurality of gears, or it may include condition responsive devices and related motors and controls, for driving the transport member mover.

    • A conveyor is disclosed suitable for conveying objects along a transport direction. The conveyor includes a plurality of connected links, each link having a length extending across the direction of transport and a width extending along the direction of transport. Each link has a conveying surface and at least one movable gripping member extending from the conveying surface of the link. Each gripping member is movable from a first opened position to a second gripping position. The gripping members each include a gripping arm having a pivot point, a gripping end spaced from the pivot point, and a cam follower extending outward from the gripping arm between the pivot point and the gripping end. The gripping arm is located so as to be able to contact one of the objects via the gripping end when the gripping member is in the second position to hold the object relative to the link during transport. Each link includes at least one spring member urging the gripping members toward the second position. The links may be connected by universal joints, and may have two opposed movable gripping members. Related conveyor and link designs are also disclosed.

    • Various conveyor designs suitable for conveying objects along a transport direction and various related link designs are disclosed. The conveyor may include a plurality of the connected links. Each link may have a length extending across the direction of transport and a width extending along the direction of transport, a conveying surface, and at least one gripping member moveable along at least a portion of length of the link from a first position to a second position. The gripping member when in the first position is disposed below the conveying surface of the link, and the gripping member when in the second position is disposed above the conveying surface of the link for contacting one of the objects to hold the object during transport. Various designs of gripping members and related elements are disclosed, including spring loaded, cam driven, rack and pinion, and overhead designs. Various elements of the disclosed designs may be combined in various ways to form numerous link and conveyor options.

    • An apparatus for diverting a stream of articles includes a first conveyor driven in a first direction and at a first speed around a first axle, and a second conveyor is driven in a second direction generally opposite of the first direction and at a second speed around a second axle, the first and second conveyors disposed generally parallel to each other. A diverter element extends at least partially across the first and second conveyors to divert articles conveyed on the first conveyor onto the second conveyor. A differential drive mechanism is operatively interconnected with and driven by the first and second axles in a direction responsive to a relative rotation speed difference between the first and second axles, the differential drive mechanism being located exterior to the first and second conveyors. An endless loop is operatively connected to the diverter element and the differential drive mechanism, the endless loop being driven by the differential drive mechanism to thereby move the diverter element in a path generally parallel to the first and second conveyors. Related structures, drives, and controls are also disclosed.

The body has a conveying surface and two opposed gripping members extending from the conveying surface. Each gripping member is movable from a first opened position to a second gripping position. The gripping members each include a gripping arm configured to be pivotable relative to the conveying surface when the gripping members move from the first position to the second position. The gripping arms are located so as to be able to contact one of the objects when the gripping members are in the second position to hold the object relative to the link during transport.
