    • A piston particularly adapted for heavy-duty diesel engine applications is fabricated from separate parts having circumferentially extending joining surfaces that are heated prior to bonding to an elevated temperature sufficient to enable bonding of the joining surfaces, and thereafter the joining surfaces brought into contact with one another and twisted to attain a permanent metallurgical weld at the interface of the joining surfaces. The piston has radially spaced walls which are both welded simultaneously. The weld joints may lie in the same or different planes. Once joined, and while still hot, the parts may be pulled apart slightly to reduce the wall thicknesses at the weld joint.

    • A barrel-type internal combustion engine includes a power output shaft assembly with a sliding joint. A power output shaft has a pair of spaced apart bearing surfaces and a plurality of radial splines between the bearing surfaces. A cam plate has a central hub and a cam track extending therefrom. The central hub has a longitudinal bore for receiving the shaft. The bore has a pair of spaced apart bearing surfaces and a plurality of radial splines between the bearing surfaces. When assembled, the power shaft is received in the bore of the hub, the bearing surfaces are generally aligned and the splines engage such that the shaft and cam plate are coupled for rotation about the rotational axis of the shaft and the cam plate is longitudinally slidable on the shaft.

    • A barrel internal combustion engine includes a plurality of pistons, a drive shaft, a cam plate and an oil pump. The plurality of pistons is slidably coupled to a plurality of cylinders for reciprocal movement along axes generally parallel with a central axis. The drive shaft is rotatable about the central axis. The cam plate is coupled to the drive shaft for rotation therewith. The cam plate is operatively coupled to the pistons to cause rotation of the drive shaft about the central axis in response to the reciprocal movement of the pistons. The oil pump has a rotatable input member coupled coaxially with the drive shaft for rotation therewith about the central axis for actuating the oil pump. The oil pump may be provided in the form of a geroter.

The joined head portion and base portion together form a monobloc piston having a closed gallery which is adapted to receive a cooling fluid, such as oil. The combustion bowl has a substantially uniform bowl sidewall thickness. The piston and method are particularly adopted for use with steel alloys and other high temperature metal alloys.
