    • The simulcast communication system includes a transmitting station for transmitting a first signal at a given frequency and a same frequency repeater (SFR) having a receiver for receiving the first signal and a transmitter for retransmitting the received signal at the same given frequency. The SFR rebroadcasts the received signal with a time delay of T. The receiver of the SFR receives the retransmitted signal as a spillover signal. A mechanism is coupled to the transmitting station for generating a second signal which consists of the first signal delayed in time by T1 which is approximately equal to T. Another mechanism coupled to the SFR substantially cancels the spillover signal and the second signal since the second signal is in phase with the spillover signal. Thus, the signal retransmitted by the SFR differs in phase from the second signal transmitted by the transmitting station only by the propagation delay between the SFR and the transmitting station, whereby the likelihood that a mobile unit will experience simulcast distortion due to the reception of the second signal and the retransmitted signal can be minimized. This invention further contemplates that multiple SFR's may be employed wherein each SFR includes a mechanism for cancelling any other retransmitted signals by other SFR's as received at each SFR.

    • This invention is directed to a same frequency repeater (SFR) for use in a multiple SFR system in which only one SFR at a given time is allowed to retransmit a received signal thereby preventing simulcast distortion which could occur due to multiple SFR retransmissions. The SFR includes a receiver for receiving a signal carrying information at a given frequency and a transmitter for rebroadcasting the received signal at the given frequency. A mechanism is provided for keying the transmitter upon the reception of a received signal. A detector senses if a predetermined pilot tone is carried by the received signal. A mechanism responsive to the detection of the pilot tone inhibits the keying of the transmitter if the pilot tone is detected before the transmitter is keyed. A tone generator encodes the output signal of the transmitter with the pilot tone. The keying mechanism preferably delays the keying of the transmitter for a time period having a duration inversely proportional to the magnitude of the received signal in response to a mechanism which senses the magnitude of the received signal. The present invention further contemplates a method for the operation of such an SFR.

    • An apparatus for minimizing the spillover signal from the transmitter to the receiver in a same frequency repeater includes a mechanism for generating a receiver first injection signal carrying the modulation component of the transmitter signal, and a first mixer for mixing the received signals and the first injection signal to produce a first IF signal having one unmodulated IF component signal and another modulated IF component signal. A correlation and cancellation circuit is utilized to cancel the unmodulated IF component signal. A mechanism is provided for generating a second injection signal which carries the modulation component of the transmitter signal. A second mixer mixes the first IF signal and the second injection signal to produce a second IF signal such that the modulation component of the spillover signal is substantially cancelled. Time synchronization mechanisms are preferably provided to adjust the phase of the modulation component of the transmitted signal as carried by the first and second injection signals such that it arrives at the first and second mixers in phase synchronization with the modulation component of the spillover signal. This invention also contemplates a method for canceling the modulation component of the spillover signal.
