    • A method for selectively flagging target microorganisms in a liquid sample also including background particles comprises the steps of adding a lysing agent selected to breach the background particles to the sample, adding a dye selected to flag the target microorganisms to the sample, adding a suppressing agent selected to penetrate the breached background particles and suppress the dye within the breached background particles to the sample, and measuring the flagged target microorganisms in the sample. The method is particularly useful in organic samples such as dairy and blood product solutions.

    • An imaging fountain flow cytometer allows high resolution microscopic imaging of a flowing sample in real time. Cells of interest are in a vertical stream of liquid flowing toward one or more illuminating elements at wavelengths which illuminate fluorescent dyes and cause the cells to fluoresce. A detector detects the fluorescence emission each time a marked cell passes through the focal plane of the detector. A bi-directional syringe pump allows the user to reverse the flow and locate the detected cell in the field of view. The flow cell is mounted on a computer controlled x-y stage, so the user can center a portion of the image on which to zoom or increase magnification. Several computer selectable parfocal objective lenses allow the user to image the entire field of view and then zoom in on the detected cell at substantially higher resolution. The magnified cell is then imaged at the various wavelengths.

    • The present invention comprises a system for measuring the thrust delivered by aircraft engines which rely on induced flow for their propulsive effect. In the preferred embodiment, for use in conjunction with turboprop engines, the system includes mechanisms for measuring static pressure immediately in front of the turbopropellers and for measuring free stream ambient pressure. These pressure measurements are furnished to a computational device such as air data computer for use in calculating a static to ambient pressure ratio which correlates with commanded thrust in accordance with mach number. The pressure ratio information may be displayed for direct use by the aircraft pilot in determining thrust or adjusted for the effects of mach number and then displayed as an indication of net thrust, and/or supplied to other aircraft instrument systems requiring thrust information.

    • A telescopic boom comprises a base section, an inner section telescopable within the base section, an outer section telescopable within the inner section, and an actuator mechanism located within the outer section and operable to telescopically move the inner and outer sections relative to each other and to the base section. The actuator mechanism comprises an extendable and retractable elongated hydraulic cylinder or ram in the boom and comprising two relatively movable ram components, such as a cylinder housing and piston rod. One of the ram components (the piston rod) is connected to the base section and the other of the ram components (the cylinder housing) is connected to the inner section. An elongated cable support member is rigidly connected to the base section and extends into the boom. Means are provided to slideably support the first end of the hydraulic ram on the outer section and to slideably support the first end of the cable support member on the ram. First and second pulleys are mounted on the cylinder housing near opposite ends thereof, and first and second cables are reeved around the first and second pulleys, respectively. Each cable has one end anchored to the cable support member and the other end anchored to the outer section. The aforesaid other end of each cable is anchored to the outer boom section by an adjustable cable anchor assembly which is accessible from the exterior of the boom. Means are provided for extending and retracting the hydraulic ram to thereby cause the ram to telescopically move the inner section relative to said base section and to cause the pulley/cable system to telescopically move the outer section relative to the inner section.

    • The packing-seal is shown in use in a borehole as a level-isolating seal for a groundwater sampler. The packing-seal shown includes an expandable annulus of Dowell (TM) water-expandable material. Surrounding that is a pressure-sleeve of rubber. A sheet of woven Kevlar (TM) is wrapped circumferentially around the sleeve and the Dowell annulus, such that the ends of the Kevlar sheet overlap. Outside the Kevlar is an outer rubber sleeve. Upon expansion of the packing seal to fill the borehole, the Kevlar sheet unwraps to allow the Dowell to expand without restraint. Once the packing seal has filled the borehole, the Kevlar sheet is prevented from unwrapping further. If the borehole contains a fissure the Kevlar provides a rigid bridge over the fissure, and prevents the packing-seal from ballooning out into the fissure.
