    • An adhesive composition for gumming paper comprises a dispersion of a finely divided watersoluble adhesive in a solution of a second watersoluble adhesive in a solvent in which the first adhesive is insoluble, the relative amounts of the two adhesives in the coating composition being such that the finely divided adhesive forms the major proportion by volume of the dried adhesive coating. The example describes the use of a dispersion of dextrin in a toluene solution of polyvinyl methyl ether. Other finely divided adhesives specified are animal glue, vinyl methyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer (which may also be used as the second adhesive) or carboxy methyl cellulose. Hydroxy-propyl methyl cellulose ether may also be used as the second adhesive. The solvent may, for example, be chosen from alcohols, hydrocarbons, ketones and esters.ALSO:An adhesive composition for gumming paper comprises a dispersion of a finely divided water-soluble adhesive in a solution of a second water soluble adhesive in a solvent in which the first adhesive is insoluble, the relative amounts of the two adhesives in the coating composition being such that the finely divided adhesive forms the major proportion by volume of the dried adhesive coating.
