    • A locking assembly for use with drive sprockets positioned to drive a conveyor belt supported by a conveyor frame assembly. The locking device includes a main body that extends through each of the drive sprockets positioned along a drive shaft of the conveyor assembly. The locking device includes spaced receiving notches that each receive one of the drive sprockets to maintain a desired spacing between the drive sprockets when the locking device is in its locking position. The locking device is movable to a release position to independently release each of the drive sprockets from the locking device. Once released, each of the drive sprockets are movable along the length of the drive shaft to facilitate cleaning of the conveyor assembly. When the locking device is in its locking position, the combination of the locking device and drive sprockets is movable along the longitudinal length of the drive shaft.

    • A conveyor construction includes a frame, a drive section stationarily mounted to the frame, and a tensioning section mounted for longitudinal movement relative to the frame. The drive and tensioning sections each include a spindle, and a belt is engaged with the spindles. The frame defines an upper support surface disposed below the upper run of the belt, and mating engagement structure is provided on the belt and the upper support surface for preventing lateral movement of the belt relative to the upper support surface. The drive and tensioning sections include spaced side members, each of which defines an inwardly opening cavity for receiving a bearing assembly for rotatably supporting the spindle. The bearing-receiving cavity faces the spindle, and each side member defines outer wall structure which engages and supports the belt outwardly of the spindle. The belt overlies the outer wall structure of each side member and the adjacent belt-engaging portion of the spindle, so as to seal the inwardly facing opening and prevent ingress of moisture or other contaminants into the bearing-receiving cavity. A drive and locking arrangement for imparting movement to the tensioning section and for selectively locking the tensioning section in position includes a pair of pinion carriers or retainer blocks mounted one to each side of the frame, with a drive pinion being rotatably supported by the retainer blocks. Each side member includes integrally formed gear teeth engageable with opposite ends of the drive pinion, and a drive pinion actuator is engaged with one side of the frame for imparting rotation to the drive pinion to extend and retract the tensioning section. A locking arrangement is interconnected with the opposite end of the drive pinion, and functions to selectively frictionally engage the drive pinion with one of the retainer blocks to prevent rotation of the drive pinion and to thereby maintain the tensioning section in a desired position relative to the frame.

    • An apparatus for sorting articles on a conveyor system that includes a pair of parallel conveyors each having an endless conveyor member or belt. The belt of a first of the conveyors is tilted laterally to the horizontal, and the belt of the second conveyor is located at about 90.degree. with respect to the belt of the first conveyor, thus providing an elongated L-shaped pocket or channel within which articles are conveyed. The lower side edge of the second conveyor belt is spaced from the upper surface of the first conveyor belt to provide a passage therebetween, and a pusher member is mounted for sliding movement within the passage. When directed by a computerized system, the pusher member is actuated to move across the first conveyor belt to engage and eject an article laterally from the first conveyor belt to a collection site.

    • An apparatus for assembling containers from a pair of open faced container sections or halves comprising a frame having a first receiving station and a second receiving station straddling an assembly station. A plurality of first container sections are deposited on a supporting surface at the first receiving station and a plurality of second container sections are deposited on a supporting surface at the second receiving station. A transfer mechanism initially moves from a position above the assembly station to a position above the second receiving station, and an inverting unit moves the first container sections from the first receiving station to the assembly station and inverts the sections, and the transfer mechanism then transfers the second container sections from the second receiving station to the assembly station. The first and second container sections are then moved into mating assembled relation at the assembly station to form a plurality of assembled containers, and a pusher mechanism discharges the assembled containers from the assembly station to a discharge site.

    • A method for stacking small articles in a side-by-side stack and feeding the stacks to a discharge conveyor. A plurality of articles, such as small video cassette containers, are conveyed in an upright end-to-end relation on a first conveyor. As each article approaches the downstream end of the conveyor, it is pushed laterally across a platform against a movable backstop to form a side-by-side stack of articles. The stack is then transferred into a movable carriage and the carriage is moved to a position over a discharge conveyor. The end of the carriage facing downstream in the direction of movement of the discharge conveyor is provided with a movable gate and after the carriage is in position over the discharge conveyor the gate is opened to release the stack for movement on the discharge conveyor.

    • A transfer tail assembly for use with a conveyor assembly that creates a reduced radius transition from the upper run to the lower run of a continuous conveyor belt used with the conveyor assembly. The transfer tail assembly includes a stationary nose bar over which the continuous conveyor belt passes at the end of the conveyor assembly. The nose bar is supported at the end of the conveyor assembly by a series of support brackets mounted to a cross support. Each of the support brackets is formed from a wear resistant material and contacts the conveyor belt as the conveyor belt passes around the transfer tail assembly. The nose bar, support brackets and cross support are mounted within the tail assembly without the use of any external connectors and thus require no tooling to assemble and disassemble.

    • An apparatus for dispensing articles from a stack onto a moving conveyor. The apparatus includes a supporting structure or frame that supports a stack of articles and the supporting structure is canted at an angle of about 15.degree. to 25.degree. from the vertical. The supporting structure is generally L-shaped in cross section, having a pair of walls located generally normal to each other, while the opposite sides of the supporting structure are open so that the articles can be loaded into the supporting structure through the open sides. The lowermost article in the stack is supported on an L-shaped base, so that only peripheral portions of adjacent side edges of the lowermost article are supported. A pusher plate is mounted for sliding movement relative to the supporting structure and acts to push the lowermost article from the stack and the dispensed article will then fall onto the moving conveyor below. A stripper is mounted to engage the second lowermost article in the stack to prevent that article from being displaced from the supporting structure as the lowermost article is pushed from the stack.
