    • The present invention provides method and device for driving local dimming in a liquid crystal display device which enables adaptive application of a gradation roll-off according to an image characteristic. The method for driving local dimming in a liquid crystal display device includes the steps of determining a local dimming value of each light emitting block by analyzing a received image data light emitting block by light emitting block of a backlight unit, producing a pixel compensating coefficient on a light quantity change of each pixel by using the local dimming value of each light emitting block, producing a required gradient value by compensating the received image data by using the pixel compensating coefficient, and producing maximum required gradient values for one frame and an average value of the maximum required gradient values for one frame, determining a roll-off end point of a gradient roll-off section according to the maximum required gradient value, and determining a roll-off starting point of the gradient roll-off section according to the average of the maximum required gradient values, setting a gradient change curve of the gradient roll-off section by using the roll-off starting point and end point, and producing a gain value of each pixel from the gradient change curve, and forwarding an output gradient value by correcting the required gradient value by using the gain value of each pixel.

    • A driving method for local dimming of a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) device and an apparatus using the same are disclosed. The driving method includes assigning a first block index to each of a plurality of blocks into which backlight unit is divided, detecting a connection order of the blocks in the backlight unit, arranging the first block indexes according to the block connection order, storing first block index ordering information that specifies the arranged first block indexes, retrieving the stored first block index ordering information, generating second block index information that specifies second block indexes corresponding to the first block indexes of the backlight unit, determining a local dimming value for each block by analyzing input data on a block basis according to the second block index information, rearranging the local dimming values arranged based on the second block index information according to the first block index ordering information, and driving the plurality of blocks respectively using the rearranged local dimming values of the plurality of blocks.

    • An apparatus and method for driving an LCD device is provided. The apparatus includes an LCD panel that is comprised of red, green, blue and white sub-pixels. A data converter converts input data of three colors into input data of four colors. A data driver converts the input data of four colors into a video signal, and supplies the video signal to each sub-pixel. A gate driver supplies a scan pulse to each sub-pixel. A timing controller arranges the input data of four colors supplied from the data converter and then supplies the arranged data to the data driver. A backlight unit is comprised of LEDs of at least five colors to emit the light to the LCD panel. A backlight controller controls the backlight unit in accordance with the input data of three colors and the sub-frame control signal.

    • A mobile display device driving apparatus and method which can reduce power consumption are disclosed. The driving apparatus includes a liquid crystal panel having a plurality of liquid crystal cells each formed in sub-pixel areas of four colors, a battery charged with a voltage, a power saving mode signal generator that detects the remaining power of the battery and generates a power saving mode signal based on the detected power to set a power saving mode of the liquid crystal panel. A controller sets a gain value in response to the power saving mode signal, converts external three-color input data into four-color data based on the set gain value and generates a dimming signal in response to the power saving mode signal. A panel driver displays an image based on the four-color data on the liquid crystal panel. An inverter generates a lamp drive voltage based on the dimming signal, and a backlight unit generates light in response to the lamp drive voltage and irradiates the generated light to the liquid crystal panel.
