    • An image forming apparatus according to an embodiment of the invention reads an original by mechanically moving an axial light source in a subscanning direction perpendicular to the axis. The image forming apparatus includes: a sensor whose resolution in a main scanning direction parallel to the axis of the axial light source is higher than a designated resolution; a controller that controls the driving speed of the axial light source so that the resolution in the subscanning direction is higher than the designated resolution; an original-image-data generating unit that generates original image data with a resolution higher than the designated resolution in response to the output from the sensor; and an image reducing unit that generates reduced pixels fewer than a specified number of pixels in the original image data to generate a reduced image with a resolution equal to the designated resolution.

    • An image forming apparatus in the present invention includes an automatic document feeder (ADF) for carrying an original document, a scanner unit and a printer unit, the scanner unit includes a carriage having a light source unit for exposing and scanning the original document and is capable of operating in a first reading mode (sheet-through system) for reading image information of the original document carried by the ADF with the carriage fixed and a second reading mode (platen system) for reading the image information of the original document by moving the carriage. When reading the original document, the scanning velocity is controlled, the reading resolution of the original document in the first reading mode is set to be lower than the resolution of image formation by the printer unit, and the reading resolution of the original document in the second reading mode is controlled to be substantially equal to the resolution of image formation by the printer unit. There is provided an image processing unit for performing image conversion for the image information read by the scanner unit according to the reading magnification.

    • In a printer head constituted by a large number of linearly arranged LEDs, a lighting time designator receives image data at a period corresponding to one scanning period, designates a lighting time of each LED within one scanning period in accordance with image data corresponding to each LED and the lighting capacity of each LED, and outputs lighting time data. A lighting mode designator determines a lighting mode for designating a timing, within one scanning period, at which each LED is caused to emit light, on the basis of image data, and outputs lighting mode designation data. A light timing controller divides one scanning period into a plurality of time intervals and supplies the lighting time data to the printer head a plurality of number of times within one scanning period at the time intervals on the basis of the lighting mode designation data, thereby selectively causing the respective LEDs to emit light.
