    • Initialization nonuniformity due to interference of light which occurs during an initialization process is reduced without causing degradation in the characteristic of signals recorded/reproduced on/from respective recording layers. A multilayer optical disk comprising at least a first information recording layer and a second information recording layer formed, on a substrate, into a multilayer structure with an intermediate layer disposed therebetween is illuminated with initializing light from the side of the first information recording layer to initialize the first information recording layer formed of a phase-change material serving as a recording material. The illumination with the initializing light is performed such that the numerical aperture NA of an objective lens used for illumination with the illuminating light, the longitudinal length L of the beam size of the initializing light, the thickness D of the intermediate layer, and the ratio R1 of the amount of light striking the first information recording layer after passing through the first information recording layer and being reflected by the second information recording layer to the amount of light incident on the first information recording layer satisfy the following relation for a wavelength &lgr;i of the initializing light: L×R1 ≦25[1−exp(−0.0004×NA4×D2)].

    • An image forming apparatus to form an image on a recording medium is provided. The image forming apparatus includes a housing, an image forming unit, an image reader unit, an ejecting space to catch the recording medium, a pickup opening to expose the ejecting space, and a frame assembly to hold the image forming unit and the image reader unit. The housing includes an operation unit, which is configured to form an upper edge of the pickup opening. An enhancement member extending along a widthwise direction to bridge over the ejecting space is arranged in a lower position in the operation unit. The frame assembly includes a first support member and a second support member, which are arranged in widthwise ends of the ejecting space. The enhancement member is connected to the first support member and to the second support member at the widthwise ends thereof.

    • A holding member holds a separation pad configured to separate sheets conveyed by a roller one by one, and a roller pressing member. A pressing mechanism is disposed on an opposite side of the separation pad from the roller. The holding member is configured to move relative to the roller between a distant position and a close position in which the holding member is closer to the roller than in the distant position. The pressing mechanism is configured to press the separation pad against the roller when the holding member is in the close position. When the holding member is in the distant position, at least a roller contacting portion of the roller pressing member is retracted from a first surface of the separation pad in a direction away from the roller. The first surface of the separation pad faces the roller.
