    • A volumetric feeder having a reversible motor, in which the feed screw is driven at a first speed when the motor rotates clockwise, and is driven at a second speed when the motor rotates counterclockwise. The feeder includes a first one-way clutch, having a driven inner race and an outer race which rotates freely counterclockwise relative to the inner race when the inner race is driven clockwise. The outer race of the first one-way clutch rotates with the inner race when the inner race is driven counterclockwise. A second one-way clutch has a driven outer race and an inner race which rotates freely clockwise relative to the outer race of the second one-way clutch when the outer race of the second one-way clutch is driven counterclockwise. The inner race of the second one-way clutch rotates with the outer race of the second one-way clutch when the outer race of the second one-way clutch is driven clockwise. The motor shaft is attached to the inner race of the first one-way clutch. A driven shaft is attached to the inner race of the second one-way clutch and is coupled to the feed screw. The outer race of the first clutch is coupled to the driven shaft to rotate the driven shaft at a first speed. The motor shaft is coupled to the outer race of the second clutch to rotate the second clutch and the driven shaft at a second speed which differs from the first speed.

    • Mechanical resonance of the vibratory feeder is maintained by minimizing a phase angle difference between substantially sinusoidal drive voltage and current wave forms. The mass flow rate of material being fed is controlled by controlling the electrical power applied to the vibratory feeder compared with a desired electrical power computed from a desired flow rate. The preferred embodiment includes synthesized drive wave forms which are variable in frequency and amplitude in order to maintain the vibratory feeder in mechanical resonance at the desired flow rate. Resonant operation and accurate material flow are accomplished without use of electromechanical vibration sensors and control is accomplished using the magnitude and phase relationships between the applied voltage and current drive wave forms.

    • An electronic weighing apparatus and method is disclosed which enables the counting of an unknown quantity of items or samples such as currency, coupons, coins or similar items of a nominally uniform weight. The apparatus includes an electronic scale which provides a signal representative of the weight of an unknown quantity of items, a microprocessor which stores a representative unit weight of the items being counted and calculates an item count, and a display for providing an output representing the running count or other value representative of the items being weighed. An accurate count of the items is obtained by placing items on or removing items from the scale in incremental groups such that the net weight of any incremental group of items must have a stable net weight equal to or below a predetermined threshold weight before the count is made. If any incremental group has a net weight which exceeds the threshold weight, items must be removed/added until the number of items in the group produces a net weight equal to or below the preset threshold and allows counting to continue. The apparatus automatically accumulates the total count made in a number of successive weighments by incrementing a memory device automatically when the scale weight reading returns to or below zero. The weighing apparatus may also be constructed to automatically sequence and count through a plurality of groups of different items to minimize operator intervention. The apparatus may additionally be constructed and operated to produce automatic verification of predetermined quantities of items without operator intervention.

    • A disc feeder for delivering material in controlled amounts to utilization equipment. The disc which carries material to a material discharge opening is disposed at an angle to the horizontal and the shearing baffle which controls the amount of material carried to the material discharge opening is movable from its position during normal operation to a position remote from the disc, whereby during unloading of the storage hopper the material discharges freely and quickly to a storage container. A control valve selectively directs material to one delivery conduit which leads to the utilization equipment and a second delivery conduit which leads to the storage container. The apparatus has an interlock mechanism which prevents moving the shearing baffle while material is being conducted to the utilization equipment and prevents moving the control valve to direct material to the utilization equipment while the shearing baffle is at its remote position.

    • A low profile weight sensor for a weight sensing system for monitoring article input and removal from article storage apparatus comprises a plate or I-shaped bar support member having first and second sections, an integrally formed linkage system for connecting the first and second sections such that the sections are substantially coplanar in an unloaded state, and are relatively displaceable with respect to each other in response to a weight load applied to one of the sections; and a magnetic transducer mounted on surfaces extending in the thickness direction of the plate/bar member for producing an electrical output signal responsive to relative displacement of the first and second sections. In a multiple weight sensor embodiment, a planar support member has a plurality of such weight sensing portions, and each weight sensing portion is isolated by a continuous slot such that all of the second sections of the weight sensing portions are connected together to a common framework by a single, relatively narrow, tongue section associated with each weight sensing portion. Mounting of the magnetic transducer is facilitated by the use of an adhesive which is relatively viscous during a setting time; and by a pair of bracket mounting guide members configured to prevent tilting of a magnetic field sensor mounted thereon, while permitting longitudinal displacement thereof; and to permit transverse displacement of magnetic field generating elements mounted thereon in the thickness direction of the support member.

    • A weight transducer including an extruded housing having upper and lower inner surfaces. Affixed to the upper inner surface is a hall effect magnetic field sensor, and affixed to the lower inner surface is a pair of magnetic field generating magnets. The magnets are arranged with magnetic poles of opposite polarity located adjacent one another. The hall effect sensor senses changes in the magnetic field generated by the pair of magnets due to relative movement between the upper and lower inner surfaces with application of weight to the housing. The voltage output of the hall effect sensor is converted to a signal having a frequency which varies in proportion to the weight applied to the housing. The hall effect weight transducer provides a very rugged and relatively inexpensive yet highly accurate weight transducer.
