    • A generator has a positive and a negative output terminals across which a battery is connected, and another output terminal for generating an output power earlier than the positive output terminal when the generator begins to generate an output power. A field energizing circuit is connected to the other output terminal and a battery voltage responsive circuit to thereby establish a field excitation when the generator begins to generate the output power at the other output terminal and when the battery voltage is below a predetermined value, whereby the field excitation can be carried out earlier and battery discharge through the field energizing circuit is prevented during the time when the engine is stopped and a key switch remains closed.

    • A voltage regulating system is used to regulate the output voltage of an alternating current generator which serves to supply electrical loads on a motor vehicle including a battery. The field winding of the generator is supplied with current through the voltage regulating system operating in a switching mode.The voltage regulating system includes a voltage sensing circuit connected with the battery, a control transistor connected with the voltage sensing circuit for effecting ON-OFF of a field current, and a protection circuit having a PNP transistor and a zener diode connected between an output terminal of the generator and the voltage sensing circuit which becomes operable to effect ON-OFF of the field current when the voltage sensing circuit is disconnected from the battery, whereby the output voltage of the generator is regulated at a lower level than that regulated by the voltage sensing circuit during such a disconnection.

    • A battery voltage regulator for a vehicle charging system includes a voltage control circuit for controlling a battery terminal voltage and an external terminal connected to the positive terminal of a battery through the series combination of a charge lamp and an ignition switch. The regulator is at least composed of a charge lamp drive circuit responsive to a generation output of an alternator in order to energize the charge lamp, a power supply circuit responsive to the potential at the above mentioned external terminal to supply operational power to the voltage control circuit, and a malfunction-preventing circuit connected between the above mentioned external terminal and ground. The malfunction-preventing circuit prevents the power supply circuit from operating by disturbances such as leakage current flowing into the regulator through the external terminal. The regulator may further include a backup circuit responsive to the generation output of the alternator to separately supply operational power to the regulator circuit irrespective of the operation of the power supply circuit when the generation output reaches a voltage value which is higher than the above mentioned potential value at the external terminal by which the power supply circuit is energized, whereby the battery terminal voltage may be continuously maintained constant to a desired level even when a break in the charge lamp conductor has occurred.

    • A first and a second full-wave rectifying network are respectively connected with both ends of generating coils of a generator for respectively generating alternating current thereat. A switching device has normally closed contacts for making voltage differences among the input terminals of the second full-wave rectifying network zero, whereby the coils act as a star-connected current generating winding so long as the contacts are held closed. The switching device also has an energizing coil for actuating the normally-closed contacts to open when the rotational speed of the generator exceeds a predetermined value. When the normally-closed contacts are opened, the coils no longer act as the star-connected winding but an independently generating winding, to thereby increase the output current from the generator even when the generator operates at a relatively high rotational speed.A terminal circuit having a resistor and diodes connected with input terminals of the first full-wave rectifying network supplies base current for a switching transistor of a voltage regulator so that the voltage regulator establishes a separate field excitation at an earlier stage of the rotational speed of the generator.
