    • A business method for using computer image processing for selectable task-based digital video compression is described. The method is intended to reduce travel of experts and let these experts direct field agents in performing tasks remotely. The tasks to be performed in the remote field can be monitoring, manipulating, and navigating. A field agent performs the manipulation and navigation operations, this agent can be a human being or a robot. The task-based compression algorithms use computer vision techniques to extract the bare minimum amount of information from the remote field scenery to allow the task to be performed. High frame rate photo-realistic reconstruction of the remote scene is not generally necessary.

    • A method and information processing system train a control system using structured differential learning. A set of features extracted from a set of input data is analyzed by a plurality of analyzing components. An output response is generated by each analyzing component in the plurality of analyzing components for each feature regarding whether the each feature has an acceptable value associated therewith relative to a value of the parameter associated with the each analyzing component. A confidence score is associated with the each output response. Each output response and each confidence score is combined into a single final output response and single final confidence score. An analyzing component is identified from the plurality of analyzing components that is a strongest candidate for generating an incorrect final output response based at least on the confidence score.

    • Methods and apparatus are provided for maintaining a background image model in a background subtraction system using accumulated motion. A background image model is maintained by obtaining a map of accumulated motion; and adjusting the background image model based on the map of accumulated motion. The map of accumulated motion may be obtained, for example, based on one or more of motion field images; stability maps; frame differences; or information from a background subtraction system. Objects can be added to or removed from the background model or the background model can be otherwise updated. One or more pixels from an image are added to the background image model if a stability measure for the one or more pixels satisfies a predefined criteria. A portion of the background image model can be invalidated in regions where the map of accumulated motion exceeds a predefined threshold.

    • Methods and apparatus are provided for visual background subtraction using one or more preprocessing modules. One or more effects are detected in a received image signal and one or more blocks are selectively enabled to preprocess the image signal to compensate for the detected one or more effects. Visual analysis is then performed on the preprocessed signal using background subtraction. A spatially-variant temporal smoothing of the image signal is also disclosed. The spatially-variant temporal smoothing can be achieved by the mixing of a new intensity value with a previous intensity time-average as determined by a weighting matrix. The mixing can be influenced by a dynamic bias term that is a real-time estimate of a variance at the pixel, such as a degree of change, and the weighting can be determined by a relative stability of an observed value compared to a stability of the time-average.
