    • A seal device for a shaft rotating with respect to a housing comprises a rotating seal ring having opposite radial side surfaces and a circumferential end surface. The rotating seal ring is connected for co-rotation with the shaft. A non-rotating seal ring is non-rotatably connected to the housing over a yielding packing element and surrounds at least a portion of the rotating seal ring to define axial plane sealing gaps and an annular circumferential gap. Sealing fluid is pumped to each gap over bores communicating with the radial plane gaps. An electromagnet is connected to the housing and attracts or repels magnetic material in a radially extending portion of the non-rotating seal ring for regulating the width of each radial plane gap. Electromagnet is connected over a control unit to a sensor for sensing each gap, to maintain a selected gap width for each gap by regulating the activation of the electromagnet. The non-rotating seal ring is also slidable within a smooth sleeve connected to the housing.

    • A gas-sealed shaft packing, comprises a rotary sealing ring which is adapted to be fixed to the shaft for rotation therewith and which has respective end surfaces which are spaced apart slightly from respective fixed sealing rings to define a sealing gap on respective sides of the rotary sealing ring. The fixed rings are biased toward the movable ring and gas conduits extend from a housing into each fixed ring and terminate in the gap between the fixed ring and the associated rotary sealing ring. The fixed rings are held by flange members which extend radially inwardly from the housing toward the shaft and resilient diaphragms are disposed between the flanges and the fixed rings or non-rotatable rings so as to urge them toward the rotatable sealing ring carried by the shaft. The biasing means also divides the housing to a space adjacent the shaft on one side of the diaphragms and a space adjacent the housing on the other side and gas is delivered into the gap through a conduit connected into each fixed ring and it escapes in both radial directions in respect to the shaft into the associated spaces on each side and then flows through an outlet conduit which may be advantageously regulated by a valve.

    • A liquid sealed shaft seal for a rotatable shaft comprises a housing disposed around the shaft and defining a seal chamber which can be supplied with sealing liquid. A seal disc is fixed to the shaft and extends into the chamber. An axially movable piston is mounted on the housing for axial movement toward and away from a side face of the seal disc. The piston is provided with a slide ring which engages the slide disc when the shaft is at a standstill and which, through a circumferentially induced increase in pressure for the sealing liquid in the chamber, is moved axially away from the disc when the shaft and disc rotate. A resilient bellows is connected between the piston and the housing for biasing the piston toward the disc.

    • In a liquid packing, the inlet pressure of the sealing liquid is substantially increased above the gas pressure at the high pressure side, by means of a centrifugal packing which is enclosed at both sides by an annular floating body and provided, at both sides, with flow passages and, radially farther, with annular flanges to obtain a safe seal. Check valves opening at a definite intermediate pressure effect a flow of the sealing liquid through the high pressure-side sealing gap between the shaft packing and the floating body and passages in the floating body, to mix it with the supplied sealing liquid, whereby the friction heat produced in the sealing gap is removed to a large extent.

    • A gas seal for a rotatable shaft of a housing which comprises, a first rotatable dimensionally stable seal ring connected to the shaft. A diaphragm is connected to the housing which exerts an axial bias on a second rotatable seal ring. The bias of the diaphragm provides a gap space between the rotatable and fixed seal ring which is supplied with a sealing gas. The material of the fixed ring is different from that of the diaphragm. A compensating ring is connected unilaterally to the fixed ring and of a material at least partly the same as the fixed ring. A slide seat is defined between the compensating ring and the fixed ring to permit axial movement of at least a part of the compensating ring. This part is connected in turn to the diaphragm so that stress free transmission of axial thrust is provided between the seal ring and the diaphragm.
