    • An apparatus for positioning a person within a container tank for inspection, cleaning, or repair of such tank is described. The apparatus includes a pivoted parallelogram type support having a cage enclosure at one end and a counter balance weight at the other end, such support being pivotally attached to a hoist member for movement of the cage toward and away from the tank wall while maintaining such cage upright. The hoist raises and lowers the support and cage within the tank and through a restricted opening in the tank when the support is pivoted into a retracted position. Bearing means is provided around the hoist stem for guiding vertical movement and enabling manual rotation of the hoist member and cage. A valve actuated cylinder is employed to control the pivoting of the support by manual actuation of the valve from within the cage. A work platform made of folding sections may be attached to the base of the cage, such sections beng folded for passing through the restricted opening and unfolded within the tank to provide additional working area around the cage. A high pressure water line extends down inside the hoist stem to a connector for connecting such line to a high pressure water spray device for cleaning the interior of the tank. The water line is also connected through a pressure reducing valve to the cylinder used to pivot the support member.

    • An automatic high pressure spray cleaning apparatus and method for rapidly and efficiently removing material coated on the surface of an object are described. In accordance with the invention the axis of the cleaning liquid spray forms an acute angle with the object surface and such angle, as well as the distance along such axis between the spray nozzle and the object surface, are both maintained substantially constant over a given surface area. In addition, the pressure of the cleaning liquid at the surface of the object is also maintained substantially constant over such given area. The spray nozzles are automatically moved rotationally about a cleaning axis and longitudinally along such axis to scan over the object surface along a predetermined path while maintaining the spacing distance and angle substantially constant during rotation of the nozzles about the cleaning axis at a given longitudinal position on such axis, by motor operated drive means which may be controlled by an electronic computer. The cleaning apparatus is especially useful for cleaning the interior surface of container tanks, such as chemical reactor tanks which contain internal baffles and other obstructions. The nozzles are mounted on folding support arms which are supported on a vertical shaft to fold such arms in and out relative to the axis of such shaft. In addition, the support shaft rotates the nozzles through a predetermined horizontal arc and also raises and lowers the cleaning apparatus. The cleaning apparatus is supported on a mobile derrick for movement of such apparatus along guide rails between a plurality of container tanks. The reactive forces produced by the liquid spray on the spray nozzles are balanced so that the total bending force exerted on the vertical shaft is kept at a minimum regardless of the position of the folding support arms carrying such nozzles.

    • A flying saw apparatus for severing a predetermined length of material from a continuously moving length of material is disclosed. A saw carriage is supported on a main frame assembly for reciprocating motion parallel to the direction of motion of the material. The saw carriage includes a saw bridge which extends transversely of the direction of motion of the saw carriage and is movable upwardly and downwardly. A saw shuttle, which carries a circular saw, is supported for reciprocating motion on the saw bridge. The saw carriage is connected through a drive mechanism to the main power drive of the material conveyor preceding the flying saw apparatus. The reciprocating motion of the saw carriage is transferred to reciprocating transverse motion of the saw shuttle by a rack and pinion mechanism.
