    • A description is given of a process of emulsion polymerization of free-radically polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomers selected from the group of the monoesters or diesters of ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic or dicarboxylic acids with alkanols, vinyl esters and/or vinylaromatics and, if desired, further monomers copolymerizable therewith, at least 60% of the total conversion in the polymerization taking place at a temperature of 100° C. to 160° C., the polymerization being performed in the presence of emulsifiers and an amount of 0% to 1% by weight, based on the total amount of the monomers used, of protective colloid. The process can be used to obtain significantly faster conversions for comparable quality of the process products. The dispersions obtained can be employed in a wide variety of different applications, such as binders for paints or as adhesives.

    • The invention relates to a method for reducing the amount of residual monomers in aqueous polymer dispersions means of chemical post-treatment. Post-treatment in the aqueous polymer dispersion is carried out by adding a redox system which contains a) 0.005-5 wt. % of an oxidation agent which contains an organic peroxide. and b) 0.005-5 wt. % of a reduction agent which contains sulfinic acids or salts thereof. Additionally. the redox system can, optionally, contain catalytic amounts of a polyvalent metallic ion which can be treated in several valent stages. Post-treatment can be carried out at a temperature ranging from 20-100° C. and at a PH-value ranging from 2-9. The invention also relates to the use of the inventive post-treated polymer dispersion for producing adhesives, coarings, powders, constructive chemical products or for refining textiles or paper.

    • Disclosed are carpet products comprising at least one flexible substrate and at least one coating and/or adhesive layer associated with the at least one flexible substrate. The coating and/or adhesive layer is formed from an aqueous composition comprising: A) an emulsifier-stabilized vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE) emulsion copolymer dispersion and B) at least one particulate filler material selected from particulate inorganic compounds and particulate plastic material. The vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer in the copolymer dispersion has a selected ethylene content or glass transition temperature. It is also preferably substantially free of cross-linkable co-monomer moieties which generate formaldehyde upon curing and preferably has a particle size, dw, ranging from about 50 to about 500 nm. The carpet product is substantially free of polyvinyl chloride and bitumen and exhibits a Class B1 flame-retardancy in accordance with DIN 4102-14, corresponding to a critical heat flux of ≧about 4.5 kW/m2.
