    • A power control circuit for a device such as a personal computer, including a laptop or notebook computer, which can conserve battery use, prevent power surges to promote longer battery charges and longer battery life, and can assure that circuitry is correctly biased. The power control circuitry of the present invention achieves these objectives by appropriately staggering the powering on of circuit components of the computer. A circuit for achieving these objectives may feature at least one memory for storing power control state data and a multiplexer for receiving the power control state data stored in the at least one memory. Further, a plurality of serially connected power control output circuits connected to the multiplexer output power control signals based on the power control state data stored in the at least one memory. A first of the plurality of serially connected power control output circuits has a minimum delay and each succeeding of the plurality of serially connected power control output circuits has an increasing delay.

    • A linear motion, muscle-actuated cardiac assist device novelly uses a powering muscle whose contractions and relaxations are made in a substantially linear fashion, as opposed to the curvilinear muscle motions associated with prior art muscle-actuated cardiac assist devices. As a result, collateral circulation of the powering muscle need not be cut, theoretically leading to prevention of ischemia in the powering muscle. Other benefits include: greater energy efficiency of the powering muscle; greater available choice of powering muscles (i.e., not limited to the latissimus dorsi as the powering muscle); and reduced profile height of the cardiac assist device to reduce protrusion from the implanted area of the body.

The bipolar nerve electrode further includes an affixation coil (56) and a thin insulation layer or flap (57), this latter being adapted to be sutured to the surface of the patient's muscle to thereby preclude or limit stimulating electrical energy to be transmitted to adjacent muscles, this allowing for a more focused concentration of electrical energy to the nerve trunk (58) to be stimulated.

    • One aspect of this invention relates to a temporary heart wire, and external connector therefore, and the combination of the two, wherein the distal end of the heart wire includes a temporary affixation coil (8) and distal pacing (2) and sensing (1) electrodes connected by means of a coaxial helicoidally wound cable (3) to a proximal electrode (7) and a breakaway needle (6) which also serves as a proximal electrode.
