摘要： A restraint system and method is adaptive to the size of the occupant, and adapts both pretensioning and load limitation characteristics to the occupant. The adaptive restraint system generally includes a retractor, a belt anchorage pretensioner, and a retractor pretensioner. The system is operable in at least a first mode and a second mode. In the first mode, both the belt anchorage pretensioner and the retractor pretensioner are activated when the occupant is estimated to be above a predetermined size, thereby providing a first load limitation characteristic. In the second mode, only the belt anchorage pretensioner is activated when the occupant is estimated to be at or below the predetermined size, thereby providing a second load limitation characteristic.

摘要： A seat belt system for motor vehicle applications incorporating a dual retractor restraint system with a portion of the seat belt webbing having a locally thick segment such as an inflatable seat belt portion. The dual retractors include electrically controlled actuating clutching mechanisms which operate to maintain the inflatable belt portion in a desired position relative to the upper torso of the seat occupant without requiring the inflatable belt portion to pass through the system D-ring or latch tongue or a high mounted retractor. When the occupant is donning the belt, the shoulder retractor is locked and the webbing is extracted from the lap retractor. Once the tongue is latched into the latch plate, the lap retractor is locked and movement of the occupant is permitted by allowing extraction of webbing from the shoulder retractor.

The frame is for fixedly attaching the seatbelt retractor to a vehicle structure. The spindle is supported by the frame for rotatable movement within the frame. The pretensioning device is connected to the spindle for rotating the spindle to tighten the seatbelt. The torsion member is disposed within the spindle and has a first end fixedly secured to the spindle and a second end fixedly secured to the pretensioning device. The tread head is selectively engaged to the spindle for preventing rotation of the spindle and protraction of the seatbelt. The locking element is for selectively locking the tread head to the spindle. During pretensioning the locking elements are disengaged to enable pretensioning via the torsion bar.
