    • A fastener driving tool powered by internal combustion of an air/fuel mixture. The tool body contains connected upper and lower coaxial cylinders. The upper cylinder is provided with a piston assembly and is connected by a one-way valve to a combustion air chamber. The lower cylinder contains a piston/driver assembly and is surrounded by and connected to a return air chamber. The upper cylinder piston assembly and the lower cylinder piston/driver assembly, when in their normal unactuated positions, define therebetween a combustion chamber provided with an ignition device. A positive trigger-actuated cam system, upon actuation of the trigger, is configured to open a fuel valve to introduce a measured amount of gaseous fuel from a source thereof into the combustion chamber; to thereafter open an air valve to introduce a measured quantity of air from the combustion air chamber into the combustion chamber; to next actuate the ignition device to combust the aire fuel mixture causing the lower cylinder piston/driver assembly to drive a fastener and to fill the return air chamber with air under pressure in the upper cylinder piston assembly to replenish air under pressure in the combustion air chamber; and finally to actuate a control valve operating an exhaust valve eliminating products of combustion enabling the upper cylinder piston assembly to return to its normal position and air from the return air chamber to return the lower cylinder piston/driver assembly to its normal position.

    • A hand tool in the form of a pneumatically actuated mallet. The tool comprises a conventional pneumatic motor of the type employed in pneumatic fastener driving tools, including a tool body having a main cylinder, a piston/driver assembly, trigger-actuated control valve means, and means for connection to a source of air under pressure. A guide body is affixed to the tool body beneath the main cylinder and has a longitudinal bore to slidably guide the driver. A housing is supported by the free end of the guide body and comprises a closed first end adjacent the guide body with a perforation for passage of the driver therethrough, a peripheral wall and an open second end. A mallet is provided having a body portion and a slightly larger head portion with a shoulder formed therebetween. A retainer is affixed to the housing wall partially closing the second end of the housing. The mallet head portion is reciprocally mounted in the housing with its body portion extending through an opening in the retainer. A spring biases the mallet head shoulder into abutment with the retainer, in which position the mallet head is just out of reach of the driver. The mallet body mounts a nose piece. When the nose piece is pressed against a work piece and the trigger is actuated, the piston/driver assembly accelerates forwardly and impacts the mallet head, generating a push force in the mallet and its nose piece.

    • A regulator for adjusting the amount of power generated by a pneumatic fastener driving tool of the type having a body connected to a source of air under pressure and containing a cylinder with a piston/driver assembly mounted therein and a main valve. The main valve is slidably supported above the cylinder on a centerpost affixed to a cap closing the top of that portion of the tool body surrounding the cylinder. The main valve is shiftable on the centerpost between a closed position engaging the upper end of the cylinder and shutting off the cylinder from the supply of air under pressure within the tool body and opening vent passages in the centerpost and cap to vent the cylinder volume above the piston to atmosphere, and an open position closing the vent passages and opening the upper end of the cylinder to air under pressure within the tool body to actuate the tool. The regulator comprises an adjustable stop mounted in the centerpost and extending thereabout. The stop is shiftable toward and away from the cylinder and determines the open position of the main valve and thus the size of the opening between the cylinder and the main valve, which determines the power generated by the tool. An adjustment screw is rotatively mounted in the cap, having a first end above the cap and provided with a knob and a second end threadedly engaged in the stop to shift the stop.

    • A fastener driving tool powered by internal combustion of an oxidizer/fuel mixture. The tool body contains a cylinder provided with a piston/driver assembly. The cylinder is surrounded by and connected to a return air chamber. A combustion chamber, provided with an ignition device, is located at the upper end of the cylinder. A positive trigger-actuated cam system, upon actuation of the trigger, is configured to open a fuel valve to introduce a measured amount of gaseous fuel from a source thereof into the combustion chamber; to thereafter open an oxidizer valve to introduce a measured quantity of gaseous oxidizer from a source thereof into the combustion chamber; to next actuate the ignition device to combust the oxidizer/fuel mixture causing the piston/driver assembly to drive a fastener and to fill the return air chamber with air under pressure; and finally to actuate a pilot valve operating an exhaust valve eliminating products of combustion from the combustion chamber, enabling air from the return air chamber to return the piston/driver assembly to its normal position. The sources of gaseous fuel and gaseous oxidizer comprise canisters of each replaceably mounted within the tool body.

    • A fastener driving tool powered by internal combustion of an air/fuel mixture. A tool body has located therein upper and lower coaxial cylinders containing upper and lower pistons, respectively, attached to a common driver and forming a piston/driver assembly shiftable between a normal retracted position and an extended fastener driving position. A combustion chamber at the upper end of the lower cylinder and having an ignition device therein. The tool body contains a combustion air chamber and at least one return air chamber, together with a source of gaseous fuel. A trigger actuated control valve is configured to introduce a measured air/fuel mixture from the combustion air chamber and the source of gaseous fuel into the combustion chamber, to actuate the ignition means to combust the air/fuel mixture and shift the piston/driver assembly to its extended position, to introduce air from the at least one return air chamber to the upper cylinder beneath the upper piston to return the piston/driver assembly to its normal position, to exhaust the combustion chamber and to replenish air in the combustion air chamber and the at least one return air chamber.
