    • A storage device including a storage medium for storing data in the form of topographic or magnetic marks. At least one probe is mounted on a common frame, the common frame and the storage medium designed for moving relative to each other for creating or detecting said marks. Each probe includes a tip facing the storage medium, a read sensing element, a write element and a capacitive platform, that forms a first electrode and is designed for a voltage potential applied to it independent from a control signal for said read sensing element and for said voltage potential applied to said capacitive platform being independent from a control signal for said write heating element. It further comprises a second electrode arranged in a fixed position relative to the storage medium forming a first capacitor together wherein said first electrode and a medium between the first and second electrode.

    • Methods are provided for overwriting data in a probe-based data storage device (1) wherein data is represented by the presence and absence of pits formed in a storage surface (4) by a probe of the device. Input data is first coded such that successive bits of a first value in the coded input data are separated by at least one bit of the other value. Overwrite data bits v0, v1, v2, . . . , are generated from the coded input data bits b0, b1, b2, . . . , and the overwrite data bits v0, v1, v2, . . . , are then used to overwrite data on the storage surface (4). According to a first method, the overwrite data bits are generated such that, if a pit represents a bit of said first value in the data storage device (1) then vi={overscore (b)}i−1, for i≧1 and v0 has said first value, and if a pit represents a bit of said other value in the data storage device (1) then vi=bi−1 for i≧1 and v0 has said other value. According to a second method, the overwrite data bits are generated such that, if a pit represents a bit of said first value in the data storage device (1) then vi={overscore (b)}i−1({overscore (b)}i−2+bi) for i≧2, v0 has said first value and v1={overscore (b)}0, and if a pit represents a bit of said other value in the data storage device (1) then vi={overscore (({overscore (b)}i−1({overscore (b)}i−2+bi)))} for i≧2, v0 has said other value and v1=b0. With both methods, the result of the overwrite operation is to record either the coded input data b0, b1, b2, . . . , or its complement {overscore (b)}0, {overscore (b)}1, {overscore (b)}2, . . . , depending on whether a pit represents a bit having the first value or a bit having the other value. This result is independent of the bit values of the data which is overwritten.

    • Apparatus for reducing sensitivity of an article to mechanical shock comprises a frame; first and second planar masses mounted in the frame for bi-directional movement relative to the frame along a first axis of displacement; a first lever pivotable about a first fulcrum secured to the frame; the lever having one end connected to the first mass and the other end connected to the second mass, and the fulcrum being disposed between the ends of the lever; whereby the torque exerted about the fulcrum by the first mass is countered by the torque exerted about the fulcrum by the second mass in response to a mechanical shock applied to the frame along the axis of displacement such that an article carried by the first mass in use has reduced sensitivity to the shock.
