    • The present invention features a method and an apparatus for preventing lift chains from becoming slack in a lift truck with a "man-up" feature installed. Lift trucks are generally those vehicles that feature hydraulically controlled lift masts with a chain supported fork carriage. Operators of these lift vehicles with the remote lift and lower feature are generally lifted and lowered by these masts, known in the trade as a "man-up" condition. It is quite desirable to prevent a slack chain condition in the man-up mast position. The invention features a pressure transducer for monitoring a drop in hydraulic fluid pressure established by the flow control valve that regulates the lowering speed of the mast during the remote mode, i.e., when the fork carriage is being lowered by the operator in the platform attached to the fork carriage. The invention turns off the normally closed load-holding valve when the hydraulic pressure drops below a predetermined value, which stops the flow of hydraulic fluid back into the reservoir. This, in turn, stops the cylinder(s) from lowering and keeps the fork carriage lift chains from becoming slack.

    • A method for calibrating an electronic scale includes sampling the output of the scale a predetermined number of times to generate a number of average readings for the weight that is placed on the scale, comparing two successive average readings and selecting the average reading that is within a predetermined weight of the previous average reading, comparing the digital signals sampled representing the selected average reading with the setting of a plurality of settable switches in which each switch position will represent a binary bit and displaying on a display the switch settings which represents the selected average reading of the output of the scale. The operator in response to instructions displayed on the display will place a weighted object on the scale, set one of the switches of the settable switches in response to placing the weight on the scale and set the switches in response to the instructions displayed on the display to store the selected average reading in the settable switches. The method is repeated for a second weight.

    • A system and apparatus for compressing redundant and non-redundant binary data generated as part of an operation of a time and attendance terminal in which the data represents the time an employee is present during working hours. The first data entry includes the date and the time the employee operates the terminal together with other data identifying the employee which is stored in a circular buffer. The time of day data includes the hour and the minutes of the keyboard operation. Subsequent data entries include redundant data such as the date and the hour of the terminal operation which may not change and non-redundant data such as the minutes that pertain to the terminal operation together with data identifying the operator. After the redundant and non-redundant data of the first data entry are stored, only the non-redundant data of each subsequent data entry is stored. Upon reading out the non-redundant data from the buffer, a pointer which includes the redundant data such as the date and the hour of the first data entry is added to the non-redundant data read. If the date and/or hour changes, such changed data is stored in the buffer and is transferred to the pointer as the data is read out of the buffer, thus updating the data stored in the pointer.
