    • A multiple station tube bender includes a rotatable table upon a platform adapted for incremental rotary movements and for intermittent raising and lowering. The horizontally disposed support rod is adapted to axially mount a tubular workpiece to be bent. A radially extending rod support is mounted upon the table for journalling the rod and including a gear mechanism for variably rotating the support rod for angular orientation of the workpiece before bending. A series of spaced bending stations are arranged around the platform, each including a bending brake assembly at varying center distances from the table and adapted for successive and progressive forming of bends in the workpiece at spaced points along its length. After each bend, the table automatically elevates and rotates the workpiece in a horizontal plane to the next bending station and lowers the workpiece into registry with the bending brake. A gear mechanism upon the rod support effects automatic rotaton of the workpiece to a predetermined angle for the next successive bend. The bending brakes at all bending stations are adapted to act simultaneously on an adjacent workpiece so that there is a continuous intermittent delivery of workpieces in final form at the final bending station during continuous intermittent rotary movements of the table.

    • A universal tube bending machine includes a frame mounting an upper die clamp with a downturned channel. A support arm is pivoted to the frame and mounts a corresponding lower die clamp with an upturned tube receiving channel to grip the tube to be bent. A lower bending die is secured upon said arm outwardly of the lower die clamp, having an arcuate channel to receive the tube and of a predetermine radius corresponding to the desired bending radius for said tube. A power reciprocated bending arm including a depending die block is rotatably mounted on the frame on a center corresponding to the lower bending die, and has a downwardly opening tube engaging channel. The bending die block is adapted to rotate in the range of 1.degree. to 180.degree. making a corresponding bend in the tube. A power cylinder and rod on the frame operatively holds the arm, the lower die clamp and the lower bending die in registry with the tube during bending and thereafter is adapted to retract the lower die clamp and bending die. The bending die block is adapted to retract to inoperative position. A spindle axially engages the tube for successively and alternately advancing and rotating the tube angularly.

    • A binary controlled tube bending machine wherein a binary punched card system is used to programmably control (1) the longitudinal position of a plurality of spaced bends along the length of a tubular workpiece; (2) the radial orientation of the bends with respect to one another; and (3) the depth of each of the bends. An elongated work support having a bending station positioned at one end thereof slidably mounts a carriage for reciprocal motion toward and away from the bending station. An arbor assembly is mounted on the carriage for releasably retaining the tubular workpiece. The reciprocal motion of a first rack gear controls the advance of the carriage to properly position the workpiece longitudinally for successive bends; the reciprocal motion of a second rack gear controls the radial orientation of the workpiece by controlling the angle through which the arbor assembly is rotated; and the vertical positioning of a limit switch which operates to terminate the stroke of a hydraulic ram having a bending die at one end thereof controls the depth of the bend. The operation of the first and second rack gears and the limit switch positioner is effected by a binary feed mechanism under the program control of a punched card system.Each binary feed mechanism includes a plurality of cylinder assemblies arranged in an axially aligned series. Each of the assemblies has a piston, a piston rod and a cylinder housing. The length of the piston stroke of each of the assemblies represents a discrete binary number. The series is arranged sequentially so as to represent the sequence of binary numbers (2.sup.0, 2.sup.1, 2.sup.2, . . . 2.sup.n).

    • A pipe assembly tool adapted to swedge a ring onto the overlap of a pair of telescoped pipes for securing them together, comprises a pair of aligned swedge die blocks, each having opposed semicircular channels of semicircular cross section, adapted to receive a ring of circular cross-section upon the overlap of a pair of telescoped pipes. A power cylinder has a cross head which mounts a pair of die supports at their one ends. The die blocks span and are mounted upon the die supports at their other ends. A piston rod connects one of the die blocks for moving it into operative compression relative to the other die block, the ring forming concentric channels in the pipes, a peripheral seal therebetween, a bead in one pipe nested within a channel of the other pipe, the ring being nested and interlocked within one channel. A pipe shear has a pair of aligned pivotally connected shear die blocks which replace the swedge die blocks, the shear blocks having opposed semi-circular recesses for securing a pipe therebetween when the shear die blocks are drawn together. An elongated shear blade is interposed between the piston rod and one of the die blocks and is guidably received by the die blocks. Compressive movement of the piston rod advances the shear blade through the pipe.
