    • An apparatus and method for supporting plural radioactive sources in operative gauging relationship at different elevations in a vessel containing material and density and/or level of which is to be monitored, and for transporting the radioactive sources to a radiation-proof source holder for storage exteriorly of the vessel when the vessel is being cleaned or the like.In one embodiment the sources are independently supported on a continuous basis on separate cables and transported between the vessel and the source holder by separate winches associated with the source holder, with each winch independently controlling the transport of its respectively associated source. In a second preferred embodiment, also equipped with two winches and capable of separately suspending plural sources in juxtaposition in the source holder, one of the winches is used to transport a first source from the source holder to an intermediate position in the vessel whereupon its support cable is disconnected from the winch and connected to the lower end of a second cable supporting the other source or sources. The second cable is controlled by the second winch to facilitate simultaneous lowering of the entire assembly of interconnected sources at their proper final locations in the vessel. By reversing the foregoing procedure the winches can be used to transport the sources to the storage holder where they are stored in side-by-side position once again suspended from separate cables.In both embodiments of the invention, by reason of storage of plural sources on separate cables in side-by-side position in the storage holder, the height of the storage holder is reduced to approximately one-half of the normal requirement.

    • The present invention provides a decorative body costume which covers at least the wearer's entire upper body including the wearer's head and face. The decorative costume includes an inflatable central portion defining a cavity for receiving the head of a person and an upper portion or animated head upwardly extending from the central portion. The inflatable central and upper portions sit atop the wearer's head and in one embodiment add a head and approximately two feet to the wearer's height. The decorative full body costume may be formed to resemble any figure or character. The inflatable central portion may simply sit atop the wearer's head or be additionally secured to the wearer through a fastening device such as straps which attach to the wearer's arms or shoulders. The inflatable central portion may also include appendages in accordance with the theme of the costume, such as arms, fins, or tentacles. In addition to the central portion, upper portions, and appendages, the decorative full body costume includes a decorative drape which in cooperation with the central portion covers at least the wearer's entire upper body including the wearer's head and face. The decorative body drape in combination with the central portion supporting an animated head or upper section and any appendages combine to transform the wearer into an animated character or object.

    • The present invention provides a drinking vessel including an internally formed display area for concealing a decorative element such as a three dimensional figurine. The internally formed display area upwardly extends into a fluid retention cavity of the drinking vessel. A retaining member is provided which can be selectively removed to access the decorative element. In the preferred embodiment, the retaining member is rotatable relative to an upwardly extending sidewall of the drinking vessel to thereby lock the retaining member in place. In one application, the retaining member includes a plurality of radially extending tabs which cooperate with a inwardly extending cylindrical flange formed to include a corresponding plurality of notches. The tabs are upwardly advanced past the notches and then rotated to thereby lock the retaining member in place.

    • A portable illumination device includes a plurality of flexible, memory-retaining members for supporting and suspending itself. In one form, the portable illumination device of the present invention is a novelty flashlight in which the plurality of flexible, memory-retaining members are four in number and configured to simulate arms and legs. The novelty flashlight has a generally cylindrical main body portion. A bulb is mounted in the main body portion for producing a source of light. In one mode of use, the illumination device can be suspended from a bar, hook or other structure, by wrapping one or more of the flexible, memory-retaining members about the structure. In another mode of use, the flexible, memory-retaining members can be used to support the illumination device upon a support surface. The flexibility of the flexible, memory-retaining members permit the direction of the source of light to be easily and quickly adjusted.

    • An intraoperative radiation probe is devised to detect radiolabelled malignant tissues by being selectively sensitive to beta radiation while insensitive to gamma radiation. The probe is comprised of two plastic scintillators optically coupled to corresponding photomultiplier tubes via corresponding light pipes. One of the plastic scintillators is shielded against beta radiation while the other is left to detect both beta and gamma radiation. The gamma radiation sensitivity of the dual probes is empirically established and used as a weighted factor to subtract the outputs of the two probes to leave a signal indicative of the beta radiation emitted by the radiolabelled tissue. Because of the shorter range of beta radiation within tissue, only near radiolabelled tissue is detected by the probe while strongly radiolabelled, more distant tissues exposing the probe to gamma radiation are ignored. The reliably identified near radiolabelled tissues can then be surgically removed. The probe is usable in any application where local beta radiation is to be differentiated from other types and sources of radiation.
