    • An internal vehicular transmission range switch (10) has a movable contact support (20) which slides along a straight path in a recess formed between a housing having a base member (12) and cover (14) between first and second extremities in dependence upon the movement of the manual valve (4) to which it is coupled by an arm (18) extending from the support through a slot (16) formed in the housing. An elongated slider having a lower (20e) and upper (20d) blade portions received in respective channels (12a, 14a) formed in the housing integrally attached to the movable contact support blocks ingress of contaminant particles into the recess while permitting fluid flow into and out of the recess. A second embodiment (10') has a generally U-shaped member (18') having one leg (18a') attached to the movable contact support and extending through an O-ring (24) in an end wall of the housing and a manual valve coupling arm (18c') formed at the distal end of a second leg (18b'). A third embodiment has an endless track (26) in which an elongated, flexible band (28) having opposite ends attached to the movable contact support (20) on opposite sides of manual valve coupling arm (18) blocks entry of contaminant particles through slot (16") in the housing through which arm (18) extends.

    • A pressure responsive switch having upper and lower contact assemblies with a snap acting member and an electrically conductive member sandwiched therebetween. The assemblies each include an insulating body with a hollow center and an electrically conductive member having a contact in the center portion and extending externally of the body. The snap acting member is in constant engagement with the sandwiched conductive member and normally in engagement with the electrically conductive member of the upper assembly. When a pressure is applied which is sufficient to cause the snap acting member to snap into its second stable state, the connection thereof with the electrically conductive member in the upper contact assembly is broken and connection is made with the electrically conductive member in the lower assembly. The switch is normally closed by removing the portion of the electrically conductive member in the lower assembly which extends externally thereof. The switch can be provided as normally open by removing the portion of the electrically conductive member in the upper assembly which extends externally thereof. In accordance with another embodiment, the switch is provided for operation in conjunction with a printed circuit board. The switch comprises an electrically conductive contact member fixed to the board and having a contact bump and an air conducting passageway. An electrically conductive support for a flexible conductive member is secured to the board within the fixed conductive member the flexible member moving into and out of engagement with the bump in response to pressure changes.

    • A package making machine of the vertical form, fill and seal type has a tube former for receiving packaging material in thin flat strip form and for juxtaposing opposite side edges thereof in parallel vertically extending and overlapped relationship to provide a depending tube open at the top. A product dispenser discharges measured quantities of product to the tube interior space, a lower end portion thereof being sealed transversely by an end sealing apparatus. Tube advancing means may comprise intermittently operable vertically extending vacuum belts or, alternatively, the end sealer may be reciprocated vertically to draw the strip material downwardly through the former. At a longitudinal seam sealing station beneath the former a vertically elongated sealing bar moves to engage and to seal the overlapped longitudinal edges of the tube. A sealing back-up bar within the tube is pivotally supported at its mid-point by a depending support member and freely adjusts angularly to provide precise parallelism and uniform pressure distribution between and throughout the length of the sealing and back-up bars. Narrow elongated tube spreaders depend within the tube to maintain the tube open in cooperation with the back-up bar and its support member, a relatively unobstructed product fall space thus being provided.

    • A mechanism for forming heat seals or the like in adjacent layers of web material as part of a package making process carried out by a machine comprises two sealing jaws and a means for slidably supporting and driving the two jaws for movement between relatively opened and closed positions. One jaw is fixed to a slide slidably supported for movement relative to a base along a given slide axis and the other jaw is slidably supported on the slide for slidable movement along the same slide axis. A crank mechanism simultaneously moves both the slide and the other jaw to drive the two jaws in opposite directions toward their open or closed condition, depending on the direction of rotation of the crank. In the jaw closing direction the crank mechanism has a toggle action making available a high clamping force between the jaws and causing the jaws to close smoothly with little or no bouncing or impact.

    • An electric switch system (10) for use with a motor vehicle transmission has a movable contact assembly (22) mounted on the detent lever (12) linked to the manual valve assembly and a stationary contact assembly (18) mounted in an open housing (16) disposed over one face surface of the detent lever and in facing relation therewith. The housing has a plurality of L-shaped attachment projections (24a, 24b, 24c) each with a leg (24d, 24e, 24f) which, when the switch system is assembled, extends over the opposite face surface (12c) of the detent lever. A locking projection (24g) of the housing is received in a cut-out (12g) of the detent lever when the attachment projections are out of alignment with the detent lever and has a leg (24h) which extends over the opposite face surface (12c) of the detent lever when the housing (16) is rotated relative to the detent lever so that the attachment projections are in alignment with the detent lever. The housing has a pair of prongs (16d) which receive the roller (26) of the roller/spring assembly (28) to maintain the housing in a fixed angular position. An optional removable lock member (34) is shown to maintain the switch system components in a fixed position prior to installation in a transmission. A modified high current embodiment has a stationary contact assembly (18') with pairs of rails (18c') which lift respective movable contact elements (22a') to break a respective electric circuit at selected angular positions of the detent lever.
