The method features isolating a population of T cells from a subject such as a human and incubating the population of T cells in a serum-free culture medium that contains one or more cytokine. The T cells may be memory T cells (TM) such as, for example, CCR6+CD45RO+ memory T cells (TM), and the one or more cytokine may be, for instance, one or more of IL-2, IL-7 and IL-15. Likewise, the invention provides a method for expanding an activated population of T helper lymphocytes by the same means.
