    • A sweep frequency vibrator is set forth. It has an elongate cylindrical housing closed at the top and bottom ends. On the interior, there is a reactionary mass fixed to identical upper and lower piston ends. They are received in seal isolated chambers, one being formed in a moveable plug. The plug is moved to thereby vary the spacing of the chambers. As the frequency is changed, plug is moved to assure sufficient clearance from the excursion of the reactionary mass. Hydraulic oil under pressure is delivered to control valves, one for each piston end. The two control valves and piston ends have very short flow lines. Moreover the excursion permitted for the plug assures operation without bottoming out.

    • An unthreading apparatus is set forth which includes upper and lower mandrels which thread together at a threaded connection which is made of threads having the same pitch as the pipe making up the drill string. There is an internal stem or shaft passing through the upper and lower mandrels. The shaft is provided with upper and lower cylinders, thereby enabling fluid under pressure to be introduced into the cylinders to drive the shaft to and fro. Through a ratchet type mechanism, shaft movement is converted into an unthreading motion for the two mandrels and they unthread, coupling unthreading action to the pin and box at a threaded joint in the drill string above the sticking point of the drill string. This enables the present apparatus to unthread at a particular location because it is locked at that location to straddle a particular threaded joint.

    • A weapon lubrication apparatus has a body with an oil reservoir therein. A bent outlet tube has a first end and a second end, with the first coupled to the body at an oil outlet. The outlet tube and the oil outlet have an oil passage therein. A first one way valve is located in the oil passage. The first one way valve allows oil to leave the oil reservoir and enter the outlet tube. The outlet tube is rotatable relative to the body. A nozzle is rotatably coupled to the outlet tube second end and has an opening in a side wall. A plunger is located in the oil reservoir an is movable between in and out positions. The plunger has a handle located exteriorly of the body. The plunger is biased in the out position. A clamp is coupled to the body and is structured to mount the body to the weapon.

    • A method for determining orientation of an instrument with respect to earth's gravity. The method includes measuring components of earth's gravity along mutually orthogonal axes. One of the axes is substantially parallel to an axis of the instrument. Tilt of the instrument along two orthogonal axes is measured. One of the tilt axes is substantially parallel to the instrument axis. The instrument is rotated about its axis, and biases of the sensors used to measure the components of earth's gravity perpendicular to the instrument axis are calculated by averaging measurements made by these sensors during rotation. The ratio of gains of these sensors is determined from the range of amplitudes of the output of these sensors during rotation. A roll angle is determined from the bias corrected measurements of components of the earth's gravity perpendicular to the axis. The tilt measurement with respect to the two orthogonal axes is then calibrated by using the calculated roll angle. Gain and offset calibration of all the sensors used to measure the components of the earth's gravity is performed using the calibrated tilt measurements and the orientation is calculated from the gravity measurements after correction for gain and offset of the sensors.

    • An improved inflatable packer 10 is provided having a pre-stretched bladder to minimize Z-folding. An expandable outer body 11 includes an inner elastomeric bladder layer 12, a reinforcement layer 14 which may include overlapping slats or cable, and an outer elastomer cover layer 16 which may cover only a portion of the reinforcement layer 14. The bladder 12 may expand non-uniformly due to the variations in the cross-section of the borehole 20, irregularities in construction of the bladder 12, and/or difference in resistance to expansion between the covered portion and the exposed portion of the reinforcement layer 14. An improved inflatable packer and method comprises pre-stretching the bladder 12 to keep the bladder in tension and minimize the occurrence of Z-folds.

    • This disclosure is directed to a displacement amplifier for forming acoustic pulses and more particularly to one which incorporates a flexible movable lightweight diaphragm of rectangular configuration. It has upper and lower ends which are connected to opposing piston rods driven by duplicate pistons and double acting cylinders. The cylinders are located at opposite ends of the diaphragm or membrane. They are supported in an elongate tool which positions the flexible membrane in a generally rectangular window. This enables the membrane to flex as the pistons are driven, thereby enabling the flexure of the membrane to form dipole source for radially directed compression waves transmitted from the membrane in the window.
