摘要： A membrane separation device is disclosed along with systems and methods employing the device in blood processing procedures. In one embodiment, a spinning membrane separator is provided in which at least two zones or regions are created in the gap between the membrane and the shell, such that mixing of the fluid between the two regions is inhibited by a radial rib associated with the membrane that decreases the gap between the membrane and the shell to define two fluid regions, the ridge isolating the fluid in the two regions to minimize mixing between the two. Automated systems and methods are disclosed for separating a unit of previously collected whole blood into components, such as concentrated red cells and plasma, for collecting red cells and plasma directly from a donor in a single pass, and for cell washing. Data management systems and methods and priming methods are also disclosed.

摘要： The present invention relates to a method for determining an effective dose of monochromatic or polychromatic light from one or more light sources to inactivate microorganisms present in a biological fluid, preferably a non-transparent fluid. Moreover, there is provided a method for the inactivation of microorganism in a biological fluid in a flow-through-reactor. Moreover, the invention advantageously provides a flow-through-reactor with one or more thermostated light sources. The invention further provides a method of controlling the light sum dose of monochromatic or polychromatic light emitted from one or more light sources to effectively inactivate microorganisms present in a biological fluid in a batch reactor.

摘要： Implant assemblies and methodologies provide immuno-protection for implanted allografts, xenografts, and isografts. The assemblies and methodologies establish a boundary between the host and the implanted cells. The boundary has a pore size, an ultimate strength, and a metabolic transit value that assures the survival of the cells during the critical ischemic period and afterward. The boundary allows the fabrication and clinical use of implant assemblies and methodologies that can carry enough cells to be of therapeutic value to the host, yet occupy a relatively small, compact area within the host.

摘要： Methods and systems for collection of blood components, such as plasma, from donors are provided. One method includes the steps of collecting a unit of whole blood from a donor; forcing the collected blood unit through a plasma separator; accumulating the plasma in a container; and returning concentrated cells to the donor. One system includes a disposable blood collection set and a reusable fixture into which the collection set can be mounted. The fixture is operated by a self-contained energy source, requiring no exterior electrical connection or other external source of energy.

摘要： A port block assembly for interconnecting a fluid container with a fluid conduit includes a body which has a port and which is attachable to the container with the port in flow communication with the container interior. The assembly also includes a rigid, tubular insert which is engageable within the body port and to which the fluid conduit can be attached. A secure and rugged interconnection between the container and the conduit results. When the container and conduit are fabricated from dissimilar materials, the body of the assembly is fabricated from the same materal as the container, and the associated insert is fabricated from the same material as the conduit and adapted for an interference or friction fit within the body port. The same secure and rugged interconnection between the container and conduit is achieved, despite the presence of dissimilar materials.

The barrier membrane is adapted to be openable by exposure to radiant energy from the exterior through the transparent housing. In accordance with this invention, the barrier membrane is made of a predominantly crystalline plastic material, and, accordingly, exhibits a relatively sharp melting point for improved opening characteristics upon exposure to the radiant energy.

In particular, the instant invention covers methods for determining a photochemically effective dose sufficient to inactivate pathogens in a biological sample while leaving biologically active substances of interest unaffected.
