    • A method and apparatus are disclosed for automatically tipping closely incidental mail to magazines or the like. A plurality of magazines are sequentially fed from a source location to a town sort stacking location. A labelling station and an envelope tipping station are disposed intermediate the source and town sort location. Presorted closely incidental mail pieces are provided and scanned for zip code information. Labels are provided having subscriber information including name, address, zip code and mail piece attachment indicia indicating whether that subscriber is to receive a mail piece. Each label is scanned. If a label scanned does not include mail piece attachment indicia indicating that subscriber is to receive a mail piece, that label is fixed to the corresponding, next magazine being fed from the source location to the town sort stack location. If a label scanned does include mail piece attachment indicia indicating that subscriber is to receive a mail piece, the zip code of that label is compared to the zip code of the next to feed closely incidental mail piece. If the zip codes match, the closely incidental mail piece is tipped to the corresponding next magazine being fed from the source location to the town sort stack location and that label is discarded. If a label scanned includes mail piece attachment indicia indicating that subscriber is to receive a mail piece but the zip code of the subscriber information on that label does not match the zip code of the next to feed closely incidental mail piece, an error signal is generated.

    • A lift truck (16) carries a leftwardly directed ultrasonic receiver (32L) and a rightwardly directed ultrasonic receiver (32R) and an RF transmitter (34). Upon depositing its load in an assigned bin in a warehouse (FIG. 1), a load sensor (22) is actuated to cause transmission of a coded signal as to lift height and vehicle identification to a central station (60). This initiates a vehicle search by energizing ultrasonic transmitters (42-52). The ultrasonic receivers (32L and 32R) on a vehicle in a path under surveillance detect the sonic signal and relay this to the central station by way of the RF transmitter (34). The time duration which elapsed from energization of the ultrasonic transmitter to detection of the sonic signal is used to measure vehicle path depth and a comparison of the magnitudes of the sonic signals received by the receivers (32L and 32R) indicates the heading direction of the vehicle.

    • A method of removing heat from a moving web includes providing a quantity of a liquid which has a temperature of vaporization below the surface temperature of the web; heating the liquid to a temperature slightly below the temperature of vaporization of the liquid; spraying the heated liquid onto the surface of the web; and vaporizing liquid from the surface of the web to cool the web. In a preferred embodiment, an electrically charged screen is disposed intermediate the sprayer and the web. The liquid passes through openings in the screen to form electrically charged droplets of liquid which move onto the surface of the web. An apparatus for removing heat from a moving web includes liquid supply means for providing a liquid having a temperature of vaporization below the surface temperature of the web; heater means for heating the liquid to a temperature slightly below its temperature of vaporization; and sprayer means for spraying the heated liquid onto the surface of the web.

    • The position of a drive shaft of a printing press is regulated during acceleration of the printing press. A position regulator includes a first integrator and a second integrator connected in tandem with the first integrator. The first integrator provides an output signal corresponding to the integral of the difference between a first position signal indicative of the desired position of the drive shaft and a second position signal indicative of the actual position of the drive shaft. The second integrator responds to the output signal from the first integrator to provide a control signal. A control asrrangement responds to the control signal from the second integrator to accelerate the drive shaft. During acceleration of the drive shaft, the difference between the first and second position signals is driven to a value of zero.

    • Articles to be mailed under bulk mail rates are stacked in accordance with their zip code. Articles with identical zip codes are bundled in numbers according to postal regulation minimum and maximum limits. When the number of articles in a zip code group is less than the postal minimum for a bundle, the zip code group is diverted for special handling. The system is capable of identifying consecutive zip code groups of articles each of which are under the postal minimum for a stack and bundling these together in the main stream as long as together the consecutive groups are over the minimum.
