    • For use in a beam index color cathode ray tube (CRT), a multi-beam group electron gun directs first and second groups of vertically aligned electron beams on respective parallel, horizontally aligned color phosphor stripes on the CRT's display screen. Each group of electron beams includes three beams, one for each of the three primary colors of red, green and blue. The first and second electron beam groups are horizontally offset from one another, with the upper, intermediate and lower electron beams in each group tracing the same horizontal phosphor stripe as the beams scan the display screen and with a time delay provided to synchronize the video information of both electron beam groups. A color video signal is provided either to a respective cathode or to a respective segmented conductive portion containing a beam passing aperture in the electron gun's G1 control grid for individually modulating each beam with color video image information.

    • To prevent rotation of a generally flat, or planar, grid having three inline beam passing apertures, where the two outer apertures are asymmetric in shape, during assembly of a multi-beam electron gun for use in a color cathode ray tube (CRT), an electron gun alignment jig having three inline generally cylindrical mandrels in combination with a generally flat spacer plate is used. Each of the three mandrels is inserted in a respective grid aperture and the grid is placed in contact with the flat spacer plate. The flat spacer plate includes a recessed portion with an alignment slot. The grid includes a lateral alignment tab adapted for insertion in the spacer plate's matching alignment slot in a tight-fitting manner. With the alignment tab inserted in the alignment slot, the three inline apertures are in precise alignment in the alignment jig and grid rotation is prevented to facilitate electron gun assembly. Also to assist in grid alignment during electron gun assembly, a grid positioning jig includes a pair of spaced movable gripping elements each adapted to securely engage a respective lateral edge of the grid for positioning the grid in the electron gun assembly jig. In one embodiment, the positioning jig includes first and second spaced, inwardly urged gripping elements adapted for insertion in respective recessed portions, or notches, in opposed lateral edges of the grid. Apparatus for attaching the grid to the positioning jig includes a movable member in a mandrel for engaging the grid adjacent an asymmetric aperture.

    • An inline electron gun for a color cathode ray tube (CRT) directs electron beams through an Einzel lens common to all of the beams for focusing the beams on a display screen across which the beams are scanned in horizontal scan lines in a raster-like manner. The electron gun includes a beam forming region (BFR) for forming the beams in a matrix array including a plurality of vertically spaced, horizontally aligned apertures, where each horizontally aligned group of apertures passes the primary color electron beams for one scan line on the display screen and vertically aligned apertures are grouped to pass common color electron beams which are horizontally deflected in synchronism over adjacent, vertically spaced scan lines on the display screen. All of the electron beams converge and cross over the electron gun's axis at the center of the Einzel lens, with the diverging beams then directed through a convergence arrangement which converges each group of the horizontally aligned beams to a common spot on a given scan line permitting video display information to be presented simultaneously on more than one scan line. The beam convergence arrangement equalizes the vertical and horizontal convergence effects on each of the beams in the matrix array of beams to deflect the outer beams inwardly while deflecting the upper and lower beams respectively downwardly and upwardly so that each group of horizontally aligned beams converge on the center beam of that group at the display screen.

    • An inline electron gun for use in a multi-beam electron gun as in a color cathode ray tube (CRT) includes a main focus lens for focusing the electron beams on the CRT's display screen for providing a video image. The main focus lens includes plural charged grids aligned in a spaced manner along the electron gun's longitudinal axis through which plural (typically three) electron beams are directed. One or more of these charged grids includes at least two aligned common apertures for passing the three electron beams. The layered common aperture arrangement allows for increasing the length of the electron gun as well as the effective diameter of the electron gun's main focus lens for improved video image resolution without introducing electron beam astigmatism.

    • In a cathode ray tube (CRT) having a glass envelope with a neck portion, a funnel portion and a display screen, or front panel, an electron gun disposed in the CRT's neck portion has a plurality of aligned electrodes, including a charged shield cup. The shield cup includes a plurality of contact springs disposed about the outer periphery thereof and engaging a conductive layer on the inner surface of the CRT's neck portion for supporting the electron gun and charging the shield cup to an electron accelerating, or anode, voltage. Also disposed on the outer periphery of the shield cup and engaging the inner conductive layer is a getter support member. To provide a zero resultant force applied to the shield cup by the three contact springs and the getter support member and maintain the electron gun coaxial with the CRT's centerline, the thickness or strength of the contact springs is established such that the resultant force of the contact springs on the shield cup provides a reaction force to, and compensates for, the force exerted by the getter support member on the shield cup.
