    • A method and apparatus for DNA purification are provided which use a silicone structure having a Sio2 layer formed on its surface. In the method, DNA is effectively purified from a fluid sample by maintaining the pH of the silicone structure's surface to be lower than the pKa of silanol to make the surface of the silicone structure charged with hydroxyl groups which results in the binding of DNA present in the fluid sample, removing the residual fluid sample which fails to bind to the surface of the silicone structure, and altering the pH of the silicone structure's surface to be higher than the pKa of silanol to separate the bound DNA from the surface of the silicone structure.

    • In a Video Cassette Recorder (VCR) system capable of receiving broadcast signals, the still images extracted from the broadcast signals are stored in a memory area at regular intervals when the broadcast signals are recorded on a videotape. When a user requests a search for a wanted playback start position, a snapshot set screen on which the still images stored at regular intervals are arranged in an N×N or an N×M matrix form is provided to a display unit. When the user selects a specific snapshot image among the snapshot images on the snapshot set screen as a jump position, a playback mode is automatically performed by jumping to the jump position. Accordingly, the wanted playback start position can be searched for and a playback operation is performed from the wanted playback start position conveniently and speedily.

    • A line interface circuit having a dialer, a line interface unit and a DC masking circuit is adapted to execute an operation in either an emergency mode or a power-on mode. The line interface circuit unifies a voice processing part and an image processing part. The line interface circuit includes a single dialer, a communication port coupled to a non-voice terminal, and a line interface control unit for receiving dial information from a key matrix input at the non-voice terminal via the communication port in a power-on state of the non-voice terminal. The line interface control unit derives DC power converted from AC power supplied form a desired AC power supply, and transferring the dial information to the dialer. A method for controlling the line interface circuit is also provided to selectively couple a non-voice terminal and a voice terminal both equipped in a telephone communication system to a telephone line via the line interface circuit.

    • Provided are an apparatus and method for converting a pitch delay using linear prediction in speech transcoding. A linear interpolating portion linearly interpolates a closed-loop pitch delay decoded by a selected mode vocoder (SMV) speech decoder to make the closed-loop pitch delay fit in a search section for open-loop pitch delays of G.723.1 speech encoder, to obtain a changed closed-loop pitch delay of the SMV decoder. A predicted value calculating portion calculates a predicted pitch delay using linear prediction, based on past closed-loop pitch delays of the G.723.1 speech encoder. A difference calculating portion calculates a difference between the changed closed-loop pitch delay of the SMV speech decoder and the calculated predicted pitch delay. When the calculated difference is less than the predetermined threshold value, a pitch delay determining portion determines the changed closed-loop pitch delay of the SMV speech decoder to be an open-loop pitch delay of the G.723.1 speech encoder. A pitch delay detecting portion detects a closed-loop pitch delay of the G.723.1 speech encoder using a conventional method, based on the determined open-loop pitch delay of the G.723.1 speech encoder.
