    • A variable pitch fan blade mechanism, particularly well suited for automotive applications, wherein the blade pitch is compliantly responsive to selective actuation of a linear actuator. A linear actuator is disposed in the fan shaft composed of an electric drive component drivingly engaged with a follower component, a set of fan blades resiliently attached to a head of the follower component, and a push assembly connected to the fan shaft composed of a push plate and a plurality of push rods, one push rod for each fan blade. Each push rod engages its respective fan blade adjacent an edge thereof. The fan blades are resiliently biased toward the push rods such that axial movement of the push rods in response to actuation of the linear actuator results in compliant changes of pitch of the blades.

    • An auxiliary bed floor for a vehicle includes a panel that fits between the sidewalls of the vehicle and has cutouts along the side edges to remove portions of the panel that cannot fit between the wheel housings. The panel is mounted on the sidewalls by a plurality of swing arms, each having a first end pivoted on a sidewall above the floor, and a second end pivoted on the panel so that swinging of the swing arms will swing the panel between a lowered position in which the panel is adjacent the floor and a raised position in which the panel is positioned above the height of the wheel housings. A latch mechanism is provided to retain the panel at its raised position so that cargo can be carried on top of the panel as well as on the vehicle bed floor beneath the panel.

    • A vehicle having a structural bed configured to serve as a structural load-bearing member is provided. The structural bed extends rearward from a cab structure of the vehicle and includes a core layer. First and second outer layers flank the core layer and span substantially the entirety of the core layer. The first and second outer layers are composed of a material that has a higher strength than the core layer. The thickness of the core layer may be at least approximately 10 times greater than each of the thicknesses of the first and second outer layers, respectively. The composite structural bed may be integrated with mass-efficient structures to produce an efficient load-bearing structure for a vehicle.

    • An energy-absorbing vehicle hood includes outer and inner layers defining a cavity filled with foam material. The outer layer fractures when subjected to a crush load to thereby transmit the load to the foam material where it is absorbed, and both layers are continuously and directly bonded to the foam material. A vehicle includes a vehicle hood assembly having outer and inner layers defining a cavity, with foam material filling the cavity. The outer layer fractures when subjected to a crush load to transmit the load to the foam material for uniformly absorption of the crush load. A hood panel is also provided for use with a vehicle, including an energy-absorbing polymer foam material entrapped between an outer and inner polymer membrane. The membranes have a crush strength, and the foam material is characterized by an absence of a reinforcing structure.
