    • A system for monitoring activities relating to movable and removable items within a vehicle is described. The system includes an electrical energy storage device, an energy harvesting device operable to store harvested energy in the electrical energy storage device, a sensor element configured to output signals corresponding to one or more of removal, installation, and a shift in position of a corresponding item within the vehicle, and a transmitter configured to receive the signals from the sensor element. The transmitter is also configured to transmit unique identification information and data corresponding to the signals received from the sensor element, where the unique identification information corresponds with a location of the item on the vehicle. The sensor element and the transmitter are configured to use energy from one or both of the energy harvesting device and the electrical energy storage device.

    • A system and method for controlling at least one movable stowage compartment is provided. The method includes sensing an input indicative of a desired movement of the stowage compartment and determining a position of the compartment. The method also includes initiating a control signal and moving the compartment into either a closed position or an opened position using the control signal. In another embodiment, a method for controlling at least one movable stowage compartment on a mobile platform is provided. The method includes determining a status of the compartment, and transmitting a signal indicating the status of the compartment to at least one indicator display for displaying the status to an individual.

    • An interactive switch system for a stowage compartment system for a mobile platform (for example, commercial aircraft) is provided. An electronic latching system adapted for use on a moveable compartment that moves relative to a support structure from an opened to a closed position is provided. The electronic latching system includes a switch coupled to the moveable compartment for receiving an input signal indicative of a desired operation of the moveable compartment, and a latch pin coupled to the moveable compartment. The system also includes a latch receiver coupled to the support structure to receive the latch pin to secure the moveable compartment in the closed position, and for releasing the latch pin to enable the moveable compartment to enter the opened position. The system further includes a control system in communication with the switch and the latch receiver to receive the input signal. The control system signals the latch receiver to secure or release the latch pin based on the input signal.
