    • A motor vehicle steering column including a steering shaft, a steering hand wheel, and an attachment between the steering shaft and the steering hand wheel. The attachment includes a cone-shaped outside shoulder on the steering shaft, a cone-shaped inside shoulder in a bore in a hub of the steering hand wheel, a retaining nut on on the steering shaft, and a plurality of outside spline teeth on the steering shaft in mesh with a plurality of inside spline teeth in the bore in the hub of the steering hand wheel. Two of the inside spline teeth are merged to define a double-wide blocked tooth. One of the outside spline teeth is eliminated to define a substantially double-wide longitudinal blocked tooth groove. The blocked tooth has a lip extending beyond the ends of the inside spline teeth which seats on and slides over the ends of the outside spline teeth until the blocked tooth registers with the blocked tooth groove. The lip separates the ends of the inside and the outside spline teeth until the blocked tooth is aligned with the blocked tooth groove.

    • An electrical connector assembly is provided for an air bag module mounted to a steering wheel. The air bag module includes an inflator and an air bag mounted to a base plate. The electrical connector assembly includes a first connector and second connector for interconnecting the inflator to an actuation control circuit. The first connector is attached to the air bag module and the second connector is attached to the steering wheel. Each of the connectors include a channel and a throughbore extending longitudinally therethrough. An electrical terminal is disposed in each of the channels to provide an electrical connection between the connectors when mated together. The electrical connector assembly further includes a fastener, preferably a stud, extending through the throughbores for locking the first and second connectors together and attaching the air bag module to the steering wheel. The stud also guides and aligns the connectors of the connector assembly to permit hands free mating of the connector assembly during the assembly of the air bag module to the steering wheel. The first connector includes a plurality of legs that slidably engage the air bag module and a spring member for urging the first connector away from the air bag module to insure full engagement with the second connector which is mounted firmly to the steering wheel.

    • A mounting mechanism is provided for mounting an air bag module to a support plate of a vehicle. The mounting mechanism includes a single, generally flat blank of material formed to provide a generally flat base plate and a plurality of generally flat elongated mounting members which are each bent to extend downwardly from the base plate. The mounting members are adapted for attachment to the vehicle whereby the module is attached to the vehicle. Preferably, the mounting members are bent to extend generally at 90 degrees from the base plate. Advantageously, the mounting mechanism is easily made by providing a single flat blank of material and stamping the blank to form the planar outline of a base plate and elongated mounting members which are integrally formed as a single flat piece with the base plate and then by bending each of the mounting members at approximately 90 degrees relative to the base plate such that the mounting members extend downwardly from the base plate.

    • A mounting mechanism for an inflatable restraint system includes a spring housing having a spring cavity and a plurality of first apertures extending therethrough. The spring housing is adapted to be disposed adjacent and connected to a support structure and aligned with a plurality of second apertures extending through the support structure. The mounting mechanism also includes a spring disposed in the spring cavity and extending across the first apertures and adapted to retain a plurality of mounting members of an inflatable restraint module extending through the first apertures and the second apertures to the support structure. The spring includes at least one torsion coil to reduce a bending moment of the spring when deflected by the mounting members of the inflatable restraint module.

    • A method of making a steering hand wheel for a motor vehicle having a metal spider, a molded plastic rim, and a plurality of molded plastic spokes integral with the rim and mechanically interlocked with the spider. The method according to this invention includes the steps of extruding a billet having a cross sectional shape matching the profile of the spider, forming the spider by cutting off a flat section of the extruded billet from an end thereof, and insert molding a plastic rim and a plurality of integral plastic spokes around the spider. Each of the plastic spokes has an inboard end molded around a corresponding one of a plurality of spoke bases on the spider with a plurality of integral plastic pins captured in respective ones of a plurality of perforations in the spoke bases to mechanically interlock the spider and the molded plastic spokes.
