    • A magnetic core construction for solenoids or electromagnets, comprising a plurality of unique magnetic laminations adapted to be stacked one on another into a pile. The laminations have interlocking means whereby, when stacked in a certain manner, the pile formed thereby constitutes a loose assemblage which cannot readily be dismantled. Also, such assemblage has the important feature that the adjoining laminations can all be spaced from each other a predetermined extent or else completely and tightly brought together into a compact mass. Means are provided for connecting a drive or linkage member to an end lamination whereby the forces involved in bringing together the laminations can be harnessed to produce useful output or work which is characterized by a more gradual build-up of the output force. The compacting of the assemblage is effected by the application of magnetic flux thereto, as by energizing a magnet coil of insulated wire, operatively associated with the laminations. The latter can all be identical to each other, in the form of metal stampings.

    • A rail electrification system for electric railways utilizing 3-phase power, comprising three conductor rails arranged in a group characterized by a staggered relationship, commonly known as a delta configuration, so that two of the rails face in one direction and the third faces in an opposite direction. For taking off the 3-phase power from the conductor rails, the car is equipped with two sets of three collectors or shoes each, with the sets being disposed on opposite sides of the conductor rail group. Three of the collectors (not all in one set) function when the car is traveling in one direction along the rails, whereas the remaining three collectors function when the car has been turned around and is traveling in the opposite direction along the rails. The collecting of the 3-phase power is accomplished by having two collectors of one set engage two of the three rails on its side of the assembly, and having a collector of the other or opposite set engage a third rail which is on the other side of the assembly. The simple, stacked relation of the collectors in the sets is utilized, together with insulating tie bars and spring mountings and in conjunction with existing signal rails which can function as guides, to enable the required stroke or movements of the collectors to be reduced to a minimum whereby retracking at high speeds is possible with reasonably short pick-up guides. All six collectors can be retracked simultaneously, after which three separated collectors of the sets detrack since they will not be in use.

    • A hanger for supporting single or multiple conductor rails in a rail-type electrification system, comprising a cross support member extending transversely of the rails and one or more spring clips carried by the member and having legs adapted to clamp against opposite faces of the rails so as to support them in operative positions. Each clip is movable on the member between extended and retracted positions, and has resilient latching fingers which cooperate with two sets of shoulders on the member. One set of shoulders prevents inadvertent removal of the clip when it is disposed in its extended position, and the other set operates to lock the clip in its retracted or operative position. In the extended clip position, the legs of the clip are separable an extent to permit insertion of a conductor rail therebetween. After insertion of the rail, the clip is driven to its retracted position, wherein the legs are engaged by wall portions of the support member and thus prevented from spreading and inadvertently releasing the conductor rail. The clip is held in this retracted position by the engagement of its latching fingers and the one set of shoulders of the support member. The arrangement is such that installation involves merely pulling a clip from retracted to extended position, and inserting a rail into the clip, after which the assemblage is manually seated in the cross support member by means of a hammer blow or gentle urging by a pair of pliers, etc.

    • A conductor rail construction, and a joint for connecting conductor rails of electrification systems as used for vehicles, cranes and the like, comprising rail members whose cross-sections are like the figure H, and joints each comprising a relatively thick connector block and a relatively thin clincher strip underlying the block, both adapted to extend into T-slots of the end portions of the rail members. The clincher strip is bowed or otherwise formed, and closely fits into undersized or V-grooves in the T-slots of the rail members, being flattened by screws threaded into the connector block whereby it forcibly wedges into said grooves to dominate and maintain precise alignment of the rail member end portions. Flanges of the end portions which define the slot opening are initially relatively angularly disposed, and are flattened into springing position by the force exerted against them by the connector block. Abraded under surfaces of the flanges are smeared with anti-oxidation compound and make improved contact with the connector block. The precise alignment effected by the clincher strip makes possible a precise positioning of the ends of stainless steel contact strips whereby smooth traversals from one strip to the other can be effected, especially since the contact strips are back-to-back with the clincher strip, thereby avoiding arcing, excessive shoe wear and noise, and making possible a press-fitting of heater wires into aligned grooves of the rail members, closely adjacent the contact liner without deformation or tearing.

    • A hanger and a keeper secured thereto for simultaneously supporting and retaining multiple electrical power rails in spaced apart parallel coplanar alignment. To construct a multi-phase power distribution system for use with a vehicle equipped with multiple single-phase power collector shoes respectively operable with the power rails, a plurality of hangers are mountable from respective ground support elements along and at a common predetermined height from a predetermined vehicle travel path or guideway. Following positioning of the guide rails on the hangers, the keepers are secured thereto so as to simultaneously retain the power rails on their hangers in operative relation with the power collector shoes. With this construction, multiple power rails may be provided in operative relation with the power collector shoes without individual adjustment.

    • A rail construction for rail-type electrification systems, comprising a metal, conducting carrier rail member of relatively high expansion coefficient, having a cross-sectional configuration somewhat like a pair of channel shapes disposed back-to-back. One channel shape is used for suspension or mounting, as well as rigidity. The other channel shape contains a metal insert in the form of a flat contact member of relatively low expansion coefficient which is secured in place by being pinched between opposed wall areas of flanges of the rail member, in consequence of the flanges being swaged or displaced beyond their elastic limit to effect a gripping of the contact member. The inner walls of the flanges, which adjoin the elongate contact member, constitute metal guideways that assure a positive tracking of the collector shoe. Any small relative movement between the conducting rail member and the metal insert, as occasioned by temperature changes for example, cannot result in permanent distortion of the carrier rail member and consequent loosening of the insert or deterioration of the electrical conductance thereto. The carrier rail member can be provided with a skin-tight jacket of insulation that is coextensive with the member and capable of accommodating mounting clamps at any desired locations.

    • A conducting rail hanger construction comprising a conducting rail member, an insulating channel-like sheath jacketing the member and having portions extending along opposite sides thereof, and a spring clip also of channel-like configuration. The sheath has oppositely disposed longitudinal groove formations, each of the formations providing a pair of exterior facing shoulders. Leg portions of the clip extend into the groove formations of the sheath and engage the shoulders thereof. In addition, the leg portions have abutments providing sharp, cut edges which can bite into one shoulder of each pair to thereby prevent the sheath from pulling out under the action of an excessive transverse load or force applied to the rail. Broad surfaces on the leg portions limit the penetration of the cut edges into the sheath, thereby preventing distortion and destruction of the latter. Improved reliability and safer operation result, since there is eliminated loosening of the rail from the clip.
