    • A method and apparatus forproducing coated slabs of metal, particularly strips of steel, in which a metal slab is guided through the bottom of a vessel filled with molten metal having the same or different composition as the metal slab, wherein the dwell time of the metal slab is selected in dependence on the melting bath level, the casting speed, the metal slab thickness and the preheating temperature of the metal slab in such a way that the molten metal deposited on the metal slab has a desired thickness of a multiple of the initial thickness of the metal slab, and wherein the metal slab with the layer crystallized onto the metal slab is subjected to a smoothing pass after emerging from the melting bath. The smoothing pass is carried out when the surface temperature of the crystallized slab is smaller than the solidus temperature of the melting bath and, thus, at least the surface of the crystallized layer is solidified.

    • A coiling system for thin steel strip which avoids problems of thin steel strip winding on its pinch rolls and assures that the strip is guided towards the predetermined coiling roll, thus decreasing operational delays and increasing productivity of a thin gage hot rolling steel strip mill. The system comprises a flap guide positionable in at least two positions, a first position contacting a pinch roll during the initial threading period of each strip to be coiled, and a second normal operating position without contact with said pinch roll when the strip is being wound in said predetermined coiler. The flap guide may also be used in multiple coiler rolls systems and may be adapted for automatic operation.

    • A method of operating a roll stand arrangement including one or more edging/roughing stands followed by a compact rolling group arranged transversely offset relative to the edging/roughing stands and connected to the edging/roughing stands through connecting roller conveyors and a transverse conveying unit. The compact rolling group is composed of first and second universal stands or two-high stands and an intermediate edging stand arranged between the first and second stands. When rolling sections whose finish rolling time is longer than the cycle predetermined by the continuous casting plant, a first length portion of the rolled strand which has already emerged from the compact rolling group is severed from the rolled strand and is supplied to the cooling bed.
